12" brake upgrade for cheap

Silver GTP

Sorry if this information has already been posted, but I didn't find it while I was searching and thought I would save others the time I spent looking. This is information on how to do a 12" brake upgrade to your GP for cheap.

I just finished doing a 12" brake upgrade on my 02 GTP and it didn't cost much more than doing a regular brake job. I went to rockauto.com and used their parts search catalog. Look up an 02 Monte Carlo SS and add two front brake caliper brackets to your cart @ $17.65 each. Pick out two 11.9" front rotors (choice is yours about which ones to get) and add to cart. These are the only parts that are not the same as your GP. The pads and calipers are stock parts. The new caliper brackets come with the grease for the guide pins, but do not have the clips that hold the pads, the rubber boots or the rubber sleeves for the guide pins. I went to Autozone and got the front brake hardware kit #H5913 for $9.99. This included the 4 guide pin sleeves, the 4 rubber dust boots and the 4 clips for the edges of the pads. You can remove these parts from your old brackets, but I don't think it's worth the hassle for $9.99.

Now that you have all the parts you need, start by getting the brackets ready. Put a little grease in the holes to make the guide pin sleeves go in easier. Push one sleeve into each hole all the way to the bottom. Now press a boot into each hole. This was the most difficult part of the whole job. I used a washer that fit over the boot, but hit against the outside edge of the boot where it is metal. With the washer in place, I took a socket that fit over the boot and used a rubber mallet to smack the socket against the washer and drive the boot into the caliper bracket. Squirt the rest of the grease into the boots and they are ready to go on.

Do a brake job the same way you normally would, but use the 12" rotors when you put it back together and replace the old caliper bracket with your new ones.

This setup reuses the stock single piston caliper. Only the bracket gets changed to hold the caliper farther out for the bigger rotor. As far as any change, it's hard to say since I'm breaking in new rotors and pads so the feel is different anyway. I think it is more responsive than it was before, but time will tell once the pads are bedded in. One nice benefit is the stock rotor doesn't look so small behind my 17 inch wheels anymore.

I decided to take this approach over the F-body upgrade for now because I have other things I want to spend money on first. This gets me the 12" rotors if I decide to do that in the future and didn't cost much money for the brackets.

okay so this is probably a stupid question, but is this for just the rear upgrade? because i know many people do the 12" rear wheel brake upgrade. or can you do 12" on the front too because I would rather do that. Im in need of doing a brake job on my gtp. thanks!

This is for the front.

The only 12" rear upgrade is the GXP

the car brakes a lot nicer with the pads moved out that much farther. im super glad i changed mine to do this when i had my car.

Hey I have an 04 Gtp comp g. Is the break upgrade for this car similiar to the one you install on your 02?

we can use the stock pin/bolt for the bracket off GTP? (im just talking about rotors and bracket upgrade not caliper) like on a 02 monte

Yes. All I needed was 12" rotors, caliper brackets and the rubber boots that press into the brackets. All the original bolts were used.

[SIZE=-1]I found this online while looking to find some nice 12'' rotors to do the switch.

- For the Grand Prix and Regal upgrading to 12” rotors, GM 12” Caliper Brackets are REQUIRED to fit over the larger rotors. We offer these below. The Monte Carlo SS and Impala SS and 2004 Grand Prix GTP/ Comp G come standard with 12” rotors, so the caliper brackets are NOT needed for these vehicles.

- The Grand Prix crosslace “mesh style” wheels that were offered in 1997-98 will NOT fit over the 12” rotor and 12” caliper bracket.

So will the torque stars not fit either?
