'05 NA wont hold idle

Whent to start my '05 GP [N/A, cone intake, SLP cat back, everything else is oem] and the car starts and dies, this has happened a handful of times before so when its cold [its 31F when i whent to drive it] so i kick it over and go to leave... but the motor dies. i tried it a few more times with variations of gas pedel and i could huggle it between 500 and 1500 rpms with the right throttle application but it just wont hold an idle. if i unplug the maf it idles for 2-3 seconds and dies.

I have tried cleaning the maf, and running with it disconnected, and there was no change... ive been wracking my brains and searching the web since saturday [when this started] and cant find anything. So if anyone has any ideas of things to look at or test im all ears. I'm so not cut out for this whole taking the bus at 6am thing lol

Try cleaning the IAC valve first, then if that helps, replace it. Also would be good to remove the TB and clean it.

This.

Ford man beat me to it.

'04+ DBW cars are commonly known to have starting/idle issues when the TB gunks up

That is me autocrossing my gp two seasons ago.

The iac is above the pcv correct?

I guess it has been 20k ish miles since I pulled the throttle body out

so cleaned the egr, pcv, tb, maf, and what i believe is the IACV [black box to the right of the TB with a vacuum fitting and a connector, it mates into a small opening that exits into the intake] and the cat still wont truly start, i hit the key it cranks for a split second, catches, stumbles once of twice, and then goes tits up again.

still no codes.

any other ideas before i start throwing parts?

The black box to the right of the TB...you mean where the harness plugs into it?

Because the only other "black box" would be the MAF in the intake tubing...

my current list of suspects is as follows:

Fuel pressure regulator
Coil
injector
CPS
Timing chain

the first three im gonna go ahead check and replace as neeeded since there pretty cheap [i get OEM parts at cost]

the latter i cant do at my apartment complex so i would have to get it towed to my parents and then do the work, which is less then ideal, but not as horrific as a trip to the stealership.

sigh, i guess the car had to give me problems at somepoint lol

Timing chain I don't see anywhere remotely being an issue unless the chain flexing or a tooth broke on a cam/crank gear...which is super unlikely, especially on a bone stock internals car with stock idle RPM speed.

I could see that maybe in the blue car, with the idle set at 625 rpms, a double roller, and the Thrasher Cam...but not yours.

What happens if you prime the key like 5 times before you go to start.

im guessing you mean turn it to run, then acc? i dont know, ill go try that this afternoon

the timing chain seemed super unlikely to me, but i had a belt slip a tooth on one of my old cars and it had some similiar symptoms [namely backfiring through the intake]

Well I did clean the maf out, but the box talking about is to the right of the intake when viewed from the drivers side. It has a harness plug and and what appears to be a vacuum line coming from the brake booster

ok so the coils are all good, ive got spark air and fuel, it cranks and catches EVERY time, but then dies out immediately... it looks like the likely culprit by virtue or there not being another avenue of attack is the Crankshaft Position Sensor.

Anyone got any ideas?

Even tho the SES light is not on, i would still have the car scanned. Sometimes codes are pending in the Pcm and have not yet been processed to illuminate the SES light... Its worth a try if u have a scanner. I have a ton of friends with that 04+ starting issue but they all just give the car a little throttle on start up and its good to go. Never seen your problem before

Same thing with my gf's G6 but sonetimes it will catch and keep the idle, she dosnt care if it gets checked or fixed so i didnt try lol let us know if u fin a solution

ive scanned it a few times, and aside from the codes ive induced (from pulling maf/map/TB harness/EGR) its clean. i do have a service vehicle soon light on the DIC, but theres no codes with it, and its been on since i got the car.

the car doesnt respond to giving it gas, if anything it cuts out quicker.

Ive seen one or two post with the same symptoms and everything looks fine and it turns out to be a security issue, so i tried a relearn but i never get a security light... so im not sure if im doing it right, or if im even starting the process.
