05 Comp G Cooling issues

I have a 2005 grand prix comp g and when I get into stop and go traffic, the coolant temp soars up. Last night, 32 degrees outside, the car temp got up to 220 degrees. I have been fighting this issue for a little while and have flushed the cooling system several times then switched to green antifreeze, replaced the thermostat a couple times (180* now) and made sure the fans are coming on.
The car has never quite made it into the red on the gauge, but I don't think this is nomal, any ideas?

I'm gonna change the LIM gaskets soon as im approaching 150,000 miles, might change the water pump while I'm at it and see if that resolves the issue

Well unless you also changed the temp the fans come on in the pcm. Your 180 tstat won't do anything for you in stop and go traffic.

Yeah I have heard that, i believe fan turn on was around the ~ 208 mark, my fans do come on, but don't seem to be able to control the temperature as the engine continues to get hotter

^this.....the high speed setting doesn't turn on until 226 or someplace around there. So you're actually not running hot.

That's just seems so hot to me! Still tho when it's this cold out I would think the low speed setting would be more than enough to hold the car at a lower temperature

Well, again. Since that's what gm programed the fans to turn on at, unless you change it. Your 180 isn't helping anything.
And if it only does it in stop and go, where you have increased heat and well, you drive a blown 3800, the m90 makes lots of heat. The Temps are going to rise.
Are you using a scan gauge to read the Temps actually reported or just going off the gauge?

Yeah I'm using my scan gauge to read actual Temps. The gauge on the dash will get into the section right below the red area.
I do understand the fans won't benefit the 180 t-stat, but shouldnt the car temp stay around 212 if the fans are kicking on, the thermostat is is open and it's below freezing out? That's what my concern is especially when it gets hot out again next summer

05 temps are set higher for some reason, like 126 for high speed 118 low speed iirc. i posted a pic of the setting in another thread some time back.

In stop and go traffic with little airflow. Your car doesn't care if it's below freezing or not.
If it hasn't overheated and the Temps do come down after the fans kick on. Then why worry? They are doing what they are supposed to.

The temp doesn't come down when the fans kick on, that's the problem and the car hasn't overheated because I either shut it off or get out of traffic before it gets up too high

another guy here was trying to figure this all out in his 05 car. same deal, just the fan settings.

your in MO you should be able to find a tuner local to do the fans for ya. or a full tune even.

be sure you're not missing the rubber piece that goes over the top of your condensor and rad. also, reptile should be clsoe to you for a tune.

^^^This Scotty actually posted this from the .bin file for 05' for me, when no one believed that the fans on 04+ don't come on until 217 for low. This causes the temp to get to about 221-222 until it starts to drop to about 210 then it does it all over again. I posted graphs of the oscillation while sitting in traffic. It's normal don't worry about it. If you want change your fan settings, with a tune.

That's very strange heat cycling, and I had reptile tune my old 01 car, but I thought he was out of tuning, I'll message him and find out. And I've let the temp get up too 222ish and thought that was way to high for a car that has a stock 195 thermo lol
