04+ VHT'd tails!

vailskier3

just call me john-o
so i haven't seen anyone do the tails on an 04+ yet...so here is my 07 custom tails by VHT nightshades and about 15 hours worth of my time...
step 1. - sand down the tail light

step 2. - clean with windex and a microfiber towel to remove any dust etc.

step 3. - tape off (or don't)

step 4. - i did about ten light coats of nightshades letting each coat dry about 10 min. each. i also lightly sanded after every three coats because it seemed to not be very thick.

step 5. - remove tape (keep in mind the unpainted portion is still sanded so that the clear will stick to it)

step 6. - clear with a light coat of clear, wait until tacky, and coat a little heavier this time, then wait until tacky, and coat another thicker layer. (should look wet but do not let it run) i allowed the clear to dry for about 4 hours before putting them back on the vehicle.

step 7. - put them back on your sweet ride.

step 8. - buff with 3m rubbing compound with a wheel buffer (i am planning on doing this later today, and it is supposed to give it a nice glossy shine because they look a tad dull right now, but i'm quite pleased with the outcome!)

what do you think?

yeah, his do look BA. i wasn't saying that no one has ever done tails like mine, i was just saying i hadn't seen it...but yeah, flips work is awesome. i'm still working on getting mine a little shinier though. we will see...i hope it turns out 1/2 as good as flips!

Yeah you can only hope :D. A buddy of mine has a new Buick (Lucerne CXL) and he had his tails painted and cleared to match the rest of his car, came out amazing, his car's black with 5% tints though so yeah :D.

should have taken off the taped off areas after a few coats. you only tinted the areas that dont show any light anyway. kind of defeats the point of tinting them.

cops are so bad about that here though that i really didn't want to mess with them. i've heard of cops giving out tickets on numerous occasions for license plate lights being out that i just didn't want to mess with it.

You shouldve just used BLACK paint then clear them.. They look good:th_thumbsup-wink:

you are right, i should have. would have been cheaper than that VHT. and you were right, i ended up messing them up at first cuz the spray can started to sputter, and made all these bubbles. luckily, i was able to sand them out, and overall, i was pretty happy with the results. i just wish mine were as shiny as the ones you do.
