04 Comp G found at boneyard; engine shuts down intermittently.

The salvage yard nearby just got in a silver 04 Comp G they bought from the sheriff's office; it was in a high-speed chase, and the driver ran it until it overheated and shut down. Now, the car, although it starts and moves, will die after a few minutes, though it will fire back up after a very short while. Anyone got any remote idea what might cause that? I'm thinking a bad thermostat, myself, or a bad fuel pump; I can't imagine any damage to the valvetrain that will cause a fault like that... unless the timing chain jumped a tooth (although you'd think that would be obvious)! Because, if there's nothing wrong-or is repairable-with the top end, it's a good donor for a top swap! And also, for being involved in a chase, the body is in really great condition; no wreckage, only the beginnings of rust... and I got dibs on the driver's mirror, which-unlike mine-is intact!
