'03 3.1L Grand Prix - A/C Problems - A/C system and ABS have the same Fuse.

Need some help from the enthusiast here.

Here's the problem:
When stepping on the brake and the A/C is running, the fuse blows. What this means is the ABS light comes on and the A/C stop working, but the blow continues to work. Upon checking the fuse box under the hood I see that the A/C system and the ABS system is tied into one fuse.

Also, the fan blower for the HVAC system is only working on position 1 and 5. 2 thru 4 don't work. That should not be a problem, I'll change out the fan motor rheostat.

Now, I can get the A/C to engage and I see the clutch engage and disengage after I change out the fuse (10A), only if the vehicle is in park and I don't touch the brake. Once you press the brake pedal the fuse blows (location 18 in the fuse box).

Additionally, I can operate the vehicle with a new fuse and the ABS doesn't come on but I can't run the A/C within the HVAC system, only the vent/blower motor.

Now, I have got the A/C system to work with a good fuse and press the brake when the HVAC system is in position of de-frost or the venting system is positioned toward the windshield and not the vent pointed toward the driver/passenger.

I could find the answer to my question if I had the wiring diagram or if one of you guys happen to know about this exact problem.

Any help?

Jim

Wow, just wow.

Time for a 30 amp fuse :)

(I am kidding, don't try it and make the situation worse by smoking a BCM or melting down the wiring harness or setting her ablaze...) In all seriousness I wouldn't know where to start on this one...ABS module and the HVAC control panel swap maybe...but that's a pricey "try it out" option.

You know - I wonder if age is just getting to it and if you're blowing the fuse with 11 or 12 amps and nothing's really dead-shorted or anything. You could bridge it with an ammeter and see what the draw is - this might be fixed with a 12 or 15 amp fuse, which should still blow long before any wires are going to get hot. A 30 amp fuse is way too high, but a 12 or 15 would be a different issue and might be an idea.

Yeah, I was thinking about upping the fuse but was a little leery about that. I'll put the ampmeter it and see what happens. Thanks.
