02 gp gt blower motor???

Hello all. New member here so please bear with me. 02 Grand Prix GT 45,000miles, kept in heated garage - A couple of months ago the blower only operated on setting 5. After reading other posts, I replaced the blower motor resistor. No issues until now. Symptoms are: back to only working on setting 5, A/C will not work, and rear defrost will not work. Other posts indicate a possible bad ignition switch. Might this be the only problem? Please respond with your sound advice. Thank you for your time....

I don't think its an ignition switch. its not a blower motor. I would maybe run to the junk yard and try grabbing ur controls and see what that does.

I have had the same problem with my ('01 GT) blower motor. It's only worked on speed 5 for several years now, but since the A/C and heater worked fine, I didn't bother fixing the blower motor speed. Now, the A/C will not cool, so I took it to my mechanic thinking it was out of freon since I've had the car since 2001 and had never had the freon re-filled. I told him about the fan only working on speed 5 and that I have to mess with the temperature sliders to get the blower to work sometimes. He checked my car and said it still has enough freon (180 out of maximum capacity 220). He did not find any freon leaks and all the fuses are good. He said I have to start by replacing the defective blower motor resistor for the fan speed and the head (A/C control panel below the radio) since the sliders are not responding and the A/C button will not light up either. I already bought these parts, the resistor at AutoZone and the head at Amazon.com. I'm going to replace these 2 parts on my next day off which is Monday then I'll post my results.

Ok. I took it to my mechanic. He replaced the resistor with a new one. I had already replaced the head/switch (control panel below the radio). No luck. He took out the resistor, I returned it to AutoZone, went to O'Reilly to get a different one. This time, I installed it myself. Still same symptoms. The A/C will not cool and the fan will only work on speed 5, and that's only when it wants to work. Most of the time now, it won't turn on at all. I'm just gonna have to take it to an A/C specialist.

It's the ignition harness.. Not 100% sure but that's the exact symptoms mine was doing along with smelling a wire burn smell from time to time. Do a google search and you will see this a common problem with these cars, as well as impalas, cutlass, ect. When you do your search you might find the instructions to do this yourself. I found a link when I did mine that had step by step inst along with pics.

The blower motor resistor that u replace was a pain in the a$$ to get to right? Just making sure u did the right thing. When my blower motor would only work sometimes it was because of the motor itself. Its just 3 screws. Take it out and run wire from the terminals of that to the one of the battery and see if it turns on. My ac light doesn't work either. But my blower motor does. So the two shouldn't be related

Yeah, it was hell getting to the resistor. I decided to remove the blower to make it easier to get to the resistor. I had a harder time trying to get the blower put back in trying to hold it and screw in the 3 screws while twisted into an ungodly position. I'm still sore today in muscles I didn't even know I had! I didn't think to check the blower motor directly with the battery, but it does work fine on speed 5 when it does turn on. I think it's something electrical because when I turn on the A/C, my automatic headlights turn off, then when the fan comes on, the headlights turn back on. Also, I have the dual-climate manual sliders. Sometimes, it will cool one side but heat the other eventhough I have both sliders all the way down on "cool". Other times, it just heats then sometimes it actually cools. I also hear the compressor clicking on and off but it only seems to do it when the fan turns on or off. I'm still going to take it to have it checked out by an A/C specialist. I just haven't figured out who yet. I don't know who to trust for accurate diagnosis. Thanks everyone for the support. :) I will still keep posting my findings to keep y'all updated.

It's the ignition harness! That's exactly what made me finally change mine. The headlights started flashing randomly towards the end of it. I was afraid it was gonna burn to the ground!!! Lol
I got one for like $89 and all my mysterious problems went away. It's really only about an hr job or so. Much easier than that resistor I'm sure.

Thanks grdn24! :) I had replied to your advice about the Ignition Harness, but the website didn't actually post my reply. I'm going to take a look at this also.

It works now!!! Thank you grdn24!!! I never would've thought replacing the Ignition Switch with wiring harness would fix it. The blower now works on all speeds and the A/C is cools everytime I turn it on just like it used to years ago. You all are awesome!!! ;)

No problem! I was like 99% sure I knew it was the ignition switch. I never would have thought that either until it fixed mine like a yr ago. Then as soon as you said the headlights were flashing I was 100% sure! Glad I could help you out on this, that's what this forum is all about. Haha

To grdn24, Just to clarify, Is the problem the Ignition Switch Harness (AC Delco part D1490D) which is the thick cluster of heavy and lesser wires, about 18" long with large termination blocks at each end or the Ignition Switch it's self (where the actual ignition key goes to start the car)? Are these not 2 separate parts? It seems the blower problem comes from the harness and not the key switch. Thanks.

Thanks grden24 for the info. Last Friday I did change the resister (quite a job for such a simple part), I'm still sore as well. Took about 3 hours and found out it had to be the harness. Before I changed the resister, I got no fan operation at all or on occasion the fan would "pop on" in the 5th setting. A/A operation was spotty. After I changed the resister, I got the fan to work on setting 5 only so It has to be the harness as you said. I just ordered the harness today from amazon for $59.43 (Brand new AC Delco) w/ free shipping. The price is all over the place for this part ranging from $60 to $180. Should get in a few days. Thanks again.
