02 GP 3.1l Temp guage fluctuating???

Hi all....newbie here!

Anyone able to tell me if this issue is a thermostat or the sensor? My 02 GP 3.1l temp guage started fluctuating a lot and heat would work then not work...after 2 days now the heat is completely gone amd guage is still fluctuating?? I figure its the thermostat however possibly the sensor...anyone have a better suggestion as i am having to fix this on my own?

fill the radiator, if its full, flush your heater core.

A combined gauge AND heat issue would never be a sensor. Anytime I have a gauge reading weird I always check my heat for confirmation. Check coolant. If it's fine then I would replace thermo. If u need coolant then find out why you do. Haven't checked in a year? Leaky hose? Possible head gasket?
