01 Thorwing a code just need to make sure its what i think it is

Scanner is putting out

P0103
Mass ir Volume Air Flow Circuit High Input

Im thinkin its my MAF is this correct?

Went to start the car and it would turn over for like a second and die. Tried that a few times and same thing. Let it sit for a bit and like an hour or two and it fired up. Took it to the parts store and scanned it. Im hoping its just my MAF

I figured thats what it was still learning codes and the last time I replaced my MAF on my 97 I did it based on the forum direction. This time around the symptoms are different but we have a code!

Do general auto parts stores like Orileys not sure if you have those sell OEM grade parts? Or to get OEm do you go to a dealer?

So im going through a bunch of old receipts and it seems like I have replaced the MAF two other times in the last two years? Prior to joining this forum I just paid a Pontiac Dealership to fix this same problem. I have on record that I have replaced the MAF twice already and this will be my third. What could cause my MAF to keep going out like this?

The only other thing wrong with my 01 is that the ABS light has been on?

Thoughts?

the used one i got is 2 years old now, 40 bucks well spent. i also changed my maf pigtail. check your wires good.

bad wires or plug can and will throw the same code for the maf as the wires get whats knows as dry wire. when you have missing insulation or cracks in the wires the wire turns brown, and is no longer shiny and no longer passes current properly.

i had to cut my pig tail back to 2 inches from the harness, the dry wire had spread pretty far down the wire. as i was stripping the wire it was just dead brown wire, kept on stripping till i hit clean shiny new looking wire, and soldered it on a new pig tail i got off ebay. for about 10 bucks.

you NEED to solder it and shrink wrap it.

go to you tube for vids, its real easy, radio shack has thin flux core solder,($3 ) put shrink wrap on the wire,(shrink wrap maybe $5) twist the wires together like you'll see on youtube, and heat the wires till solder flows over the bare wire, when it cools some, slide the shrink wrap over the splice, and heat the shrink wrap with a lighter or heat gun if you have one.

you now have a weather proof connection. blows them butt connectors to shame in the long run. they are weak and not weather tight.

Sounds easy enough, I replaced the MAF and shes back to good. ABS light is still on and I kinda want to nip that one in the butt. Ill look into the wiring some more and see if I got any dry rot.

Thanks for the help guys

Nip it in the butt?
There are other forums for this type of thing.[h=1]Nip in the bud[/h]
[h=3]Meaning[/h]Put a stop to something while it is still in its early development.
[h=3]Origin[/h]This phrase derives from the de-budding of plants. The earlier form of the phrase was 'nip in the bloom' and this is cited in Henry Chettle's romance Piers Plainnes Seaven Yeres Prentiship, 1595:
"Extinguish these fond loues with minds labour, and nip thy affections in the bloome, that they may neuer bee of power to budde."
A version of the current 'bud' version of the phrase first appears in 1607, in Beaumont and Fletcher's comedy of manners Woman Hater (a title that they would probably have difficulty convincing a publishing house to use today):
"Yet I can frowne and nip a passion Euen in the bud."

Heh well pardon my inaccurate use of the original term. I think the point is still made. But thanks for the clarification bud.

Always willing to help out a fellow GP'er. :th_biggrin2:

I've never seen a GP go through that many MAF's.

A TechII scan will help with the ABS code.
It's probably just a wheel speed sensor or a pig tail.

Well the 01 I put in the shop as its my nice daily, and the schmuck said that he thinks that wheel shine oil is getting into the MAF and causing it too fault out so many times, I really have a hard time beliving that as its a stock air box set up and that would be insane for that oil to travel its butt up in there.

As far as the ABS issue the tech said that the sensor was upside down, im just letting them finish diagnosing the thing since it was part of my tow. Once I get it back I will try to figure out whats going on.

Between getting married and my business just blowing up had to bite the bullet and take this one to a mechanic to make sure I got one operational car, even though now my 97 seems to be working just fine!
