01 Grand Prix GT- 4K RPM, Popping sound

Hello all! Yes as you can see I am new here and I am also the proud new owner of a Pontiac Grand Prix! :) The car will be my daily drive when I'm off to College but there is a problem which I have noticed. I was revving the car and I noticed that at 4,000 RPM there is a "pop" sound coming from the exhausts...Now my car knowledge is very limited so I'm posting this on here just to see what to expect before I take it to the dealership so they don't try and screw with me and make me pay extra for things I don't need. ( I don't know about the United States, but up here in Canada, they do that :( )

Ps. The car has been sitting for quite a while I'd say. In total it's sat in the garage for about 3 years now but it was driven every now and again. If ANYONE could shed some light on this I would GREATLY appreciate it. Also if this is in the wrong forum, I'm sorry, if there is a moderator or anything that could move it that would be great! :) Cheers!

is it just a crackle from the exhaust when you let off or is there something definately wrong? Is this in park, or under power, or both?
 
yea man the rev limiter comes on at 4000...when u arent moving, it turns off at about 5 mph...so my test would be to drive and put it in neutral while moving and then rev it and see if you get the same issue..
 
im having the same problem out of my 98 gtp lightly modded with a 3.4" pulley ssac headers zzp catback with magnaflow res and borla xs pro mufflers, an intake and overkill pcm and autolite 606's and whenever i go wot i get a slight popping sound from the exhaust that doesnt happen on deceleration... im at a loss right now any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... oh it was doing this before the pulley drop and it didnt get worse after so idk :(

This guy was in PARK, in which the rev limiter engages at 4,000 rpm.

You're in DRIVE, so you don't have the same problem. Your should be using 104's now that you have that 3.4 on. Scan for misfires and trouble codes.
 
no ses light and no miss... could it just be a leaky exhaust??? and i will b changing to 104's tomorrow....
