01 GP Transmission ?

Hey my transmission has been slipping in 2nd for a long time it's getting about time to get it fixed. Does anyone know of a reputable not to costly place in NY Brooklyn/Staten Island even NJ closer to NY. I want to get it fixed but I also like most don't have unlimited funds to just say hey whatever do it and if it's done wrong no biggie I will just do it again! Thanks guys BTW I love my GP :th_sinister:
 


used trans are the cheap way, always nice if you can find a car being parted out that still drives, so you can test it first.

sorry dont know any real good trans shops, as ive also been f ed by my local guy. and my dealer as well. but that was all gm truck related, still dont trust them tho.

you may want to try a quart of lucas trans medic, it may keep your trans on the road a bit longer.
 
Yea I've only had 1 trans rebuilt in the past for a 88 K5 Blazer I had I paid like $1000 for it and it was great but I don't have the connection anymore. I was thinking of getting a used one also but I'd be hella pissed if the trans slipped or was worse then mine and it is a possibility I'd say find a car with low mileage but that means nothing it's all about if it was drove good or not. How much did you're local guy charge you? And BTW nice regal very clean it would look awesome with black rims IMO but I appreciate the clean, stock look!
 
my last trans i paid out of my own pocket was for my 97 gmc, in 2002 it cost over a 1800 and they rebuilt it 3 times, and i was still not happy.


i thought about black wheels but just cant do it. most regals have a 2 tone lower part of the doors and bumpers are silver, mine is all black. so when i was looking for wheels i found these sts caddy wheels for a good price. so i popped on em.

as far stock looking...well theres not much you can do to it for looks, theres one hood out there and its like over a grand shipped, unless you make one. the spoiler i got off a 97 regal being parted out for 20 bucks, and it was black already, win win lol i made out like a bandit with that guy, for 60 total, i got the whole steering column intermittent shaft to air bag. with the key, the center tail light, and the spoiler.

the only hood i can find. i kinda like, dont think id go for it tho if i had the money. MPD motorsports performance design – Buick Regal GS Ram Air Hood
 
Oldsman105 and Buickman104 are in your area. I know Oldsman had one rebuilt a bunch of times w/o good luck. Both of them had their best success the same way Scottydoggs did.

Got used and had it installed.

If it'll limp to CT, I can install it while you wait. :th_thumbsup-wink:
 


I just recently had to replace mine. Picked up a used one from a junk yard. My car had 122k on it and the used trans had 67k so it seemed like a small win to start out with. Picked it up for $475 and the junk yard gave a 30 day warranty so it would give me enough time to put it in and test it out. I got quote from 2 shops(an Aamco and a local for shop) and they were $2400 and $2100. Not including any parts they would need to replace once they started digging in to find what broke. There was no way I was gong to spend that much $ and only get a 12k mile warranty since I drive about 20k per year. I would be out of the warranty after 7 months.
After all was said and done, I spent around $600 which covered the cost of the Trans, new filter and trans fluid.

And if Bill is serious about his offer, I would jump on it. :th_thumbsup-wink:

Takes me less than a day to swap them out. It's pretty normal for a car to show up with a trans in the trunk.

keep in mind if you have some basic tools and the ability, there is a write up.

Wow that would be awesome 2 things though.. I don't have the money for a trans right now and will it fix in the back of a GP to make it up there? Keep in mind I'm disabled from a motorcycle accident otherwise I'd be doing a lot of things myself but can't anymore :o/ sucks but is what it is I really appreciate the offer and would love to take you up on that if you're willing in a month or 2.. But like I said thank you veryyyy much in NY you rarely meet anyone that's willing to help let alone be nice lol
 
im in north NJ and i took the drive to Bills for a trans swap. took me 2.5 hr drive each way. Bill had me out the door in 4 hours. i played tool monkey. don't slam the tool draws lol

:th_laugh-pointup: Good tip lol 4 hours to swap a trans wow that's crazy quick how'd you get you're new trans up there scottydoggs? I assume in the back or trunk of you're car?
 


the best part was the trans i bought was sitting on Bills garage floor. from max's trans swap, he upgraded to a built trans, i bought his used stock trans. i got lucky and it had a new 4 th gear hub, and shift kit installed.


ive told a few shops how fast it was done, on the ground, no lift, and 2 of then said flat out, no way, cant be done that fast. lol

should you take the drive north, i suggest getting to the NJ tpk N to 80 w, to 17 n, to the parkway n, to 287 E, take 287 to the tappan zee bridge, then to 95 north, then to 91 n, to Bills exit. that way you cut out a lot of city traffic. same goes for the trip back, if its late in the day you'll hit traffic either way you go, but the 287 route will be faster. im sure you've tried to navigate SI to the westchester before, its like pulling teeth to get though there.

round trip cost a tank of gas too, being you seem to have no 4 th gear maybe a bit more then the 1/2 a tank it cost me to get there. i lost 3 rd gear, so i was still good at 65 mph. i just had to wind out 2 nd to get it to 50 ish so OD would catch.

not to bad considering i used a tank and half driving to pick up a set of seats for my car. that was a 6 hr day, 3 hr each way. but still worth it price wise. no traffic, all highway.
 
If you check car-part.com/ebay etc you can probably find a trans for a decent price with lower miles. Depending on the year, I'd suggest tossing in a shift kit, 4th hub and EPC soleniod. All fairly quick and eazy items. (BTW I can't spell ea sy correctly as it's the way I suggest searching for the how to write up's)

A tran easily fits in a GP trunk. Recently one was delivered in a Saab trunk. They's arrived many different ways. Keep in mind, 4 hours is moving pretty decently.

I think Scotty changed control arms and sway bar bushings at the same time as the trans swap. Super super eas y when it's apart.
 
I actually found a trans at a junkyard around here for $400 83,000 miles on it.. I'm in the process of getting my title for my totaled car and the junkyard said they'd give me $450 for it.. So if all works out I should be driving out to pay a visit soon lol how much do you charge to drop the trans in? BTW I really do appreciate this offer it's nice to know there is people who will actually help a person out! And scotty I have a 4th gear my issue is really 2nd gear slipping/kicking I baby it very much so and it's manageable but I have to do something about it all that lovely power and I can't use it! wahhhhhhh lol but yes once on the highway I'm good to go! BTW since you guys aren't woman how old are you? I'm 29 I know I'm young but pretty smart and always willing to learn
 
Also I assume the trans from a 97-03 will work? Or it has to be the same year? Because that would make it a lot easier to find one if it works from that range of years..

There is a difference or two in the transmissions. Ideally you want to search 98-02. It's best if we don't need to modify the trans lines due to the difference.

Me, I'm 41. However.. try and keep up with me in the garage. I can run circles around the early 20's guys.
 
I can imagine I used to be a financial printing manager and run presses and I knew what I was doing at 23 better then men that were 40.. Some people have it and some don't not to say there stupid but I try everything and every way to fix a problem where some people just follow guidelines and lack the ability to think outside the box
 
Right, I've honed the skills. A few locals have as well.

On Scott's swap, he pulled it in and I jumped on it immediately. Intrigue98 (Max) walked in with a coffee. I asked if he was ready, he nodded and I handed him a bar. Without speaking we popped the balljoints seconds later. Scott's face was an awesome look of "these guys don't even have to talk to know what they are doing". I'll say.. it wasn't the first transmission swap.
