• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

00 Regal various issues with trans

Figured I'd post up my issues. I'm fully aware the trans needs a rebuild and have all the parts and one of my performance transmissions is already in pieces on the bench in the process of being rebuilt in my spare time.

Yet, I like to share some of my issues as well.

April of 2010 at 161K miles, I bought the car and did a pan drop trans service. Fluid was burnt and dirty. Appeared that no service was ever performed and this theory was backed up the air filter saying "Geno 7/28/04 58,684" on it. The previous owner bought the car out of TX at 60K miles. :th_wtf: Anyhow I installed a drain plug on the trans pan at the same time. Planned on doing another service in about 3-6 months to further help the fluid quality.

Dec 17 at 173K miles, the trans acted funny for the first time. It appeared to raise about 1,000 rpm for a second. First couple of times I wasn't fully sure something had occurred, then I saw it. Upon arriving home I pulled the drain plug, it pooped clutch mud and the oil was black. No red tinge, no thoughts of good fluid quality...black. At this time I put in a bottle of Lucas stop slip and topped the rest off with regular Dex 3. The rpm issue went away after about 100 miles and I began buying the clutches and a torque converter for the future trans.

Trans shifts are soggy and when shifting from 3rd to 4rh TCC applies at the same time as the shift. It's a sloppy mess that keeps on running while I procrastinate putting the new one together. I've noticed in the last week that sometimes it does go into 4th w/o TCC locking. When this happens, TCC doesn't seem to lock. I found a work around.... press the perf mode button "on" and then "off", TCC locks up w/o a question. Today the car is at 176,3XX and still moving under it's own power, fluid is disgusting again.

I believe this coming week is the week for the trans build. I need to order a new PS rack as it's in need of replacement and an external trans cooler. After all this sludge has gone through the internal cooler, I'm going to need that puppy flushed well if it were to be used again.

At this point..I'm almost holding off, just to see if I can make 180K :th_nervous:

Under all the snow some Canadian sent. It needs a T stat and the right bin in the pcm. Meanwhile..it snowed about 3 feet on top of it, a Park Ave is in front of it and the snow bank would probably keep me from getting it out from it's hiding spot.

It's at 178,6xx and ..... it started acting up again. Mostly going up hills it seems to be hiccuping from 4th to 3rd and jolting back into 4th. Pulled it down into 3rd and no more issues. Thought I might be able to squeeze a bit more out of it. Hopping on the highway this morning the acceleration up to speed didn't feel "spectacular". I felt something not enjoying life in there. It's also got a lovely sound like the relucutor might be bouncing around loose.

179K or piggy back? :th_laugh-lol3:

180+ has happened. I'm off to build the new trans.

At 180K miles, the 4th hub is still in tact and rocking. :th_king-normal:

Who is probably getting a piggy back ride home tonight after opening his mouth? :th_lipssealed2:

Even with issues, these trannys can last a long time if not hammered on. I've had some known issues with my tranny for years now and it still keeps on keeping on. Even with a little sensible beating, it still goes down the road and shifts just fine at 284k miles.

Do you know me?
I slap this baby to the floor from 70mph or more all the time causing the added torque onto the 4th hub shaft. (I'm figuring to change the trans when it loses 4th). It takes it like a champ every time.

Sitting at a light, I have been known to rip the tires free to gain the attention of a fellow motorist attempting a manuever that I don't agree with.

And..sitting still in the driveway, oh there's a noise in there. I'm thinking reluctor wheel, but can't honestly wrap my head around that.

The hiccups occur when I'm being nice to it. A beating ensues after each "issue".
