A bunch of little stuff adds up

I'm not one to rant but I think it's due. It's a descriptive one, the few readers who would commit to it are in for some detailed frustration. I've ran into quite a few things in a row already and I don't have the patience to work on my car in 20 degree windy Michigan weather.
From the start, I kinda overpaid for my car. $4K for an 02 with 108,350 mi. It seemed there were absolutely no problems with it at the time, I really looked it over. There were a few dents, one small one on the front bumper that I could fix, and one on the lower portion of the left rear door that is rather large, but not in very far and the paint is not scratched. There's a spot of the coating missing on the panel under the rear bumper, a few stone chips in the front, and one tiny parking lot ding on the passenger side. Other than those the rest of the paint is nearly flawless. Oh and the door pillars have some paint gone for some reason. Writing that all down makes it look like a messed up car but it's pretty nice. After buying it, I've kept up on fixing everything really well.
I've: Replaced PCV Valve
Greased all door hinges(including sunroof)
Replaced both front sway bar links
Replaced both 3rd brake light bulbs
Replaced right rear speaker
Replaced both valve cover gaskets and grommets
Replaced heater hose elbows/connectors
Exchanged almost a gallon of coolant
Replaced battery
Done a fully synthetic oil change

I really didn't expect to do any of those things initially besides the maintenance stuff, but all of that is around $212.

Now, getting on with my point, I have a rim leak (Michigan roads + Aluminum rims). When I got it, only one leaked to the point that I wanted to do something about it, but I ended up taking both front tires off to clean the rims rather poorly with a scotch brite pad at my college. What luck, the leaky one now holds air perfectly, and the rather good one now leaks worse than the first one did. And no, I did not mix them up, they were done separately. And it's leaking bad, 20 psi a week bad. I wanted to get it done again at my college auto shop for a while now. In between then and now I took my left rear door panel off to lube the window track and guides because it was pretty slow. That ended up helping quite a bit, it works much better now.

Two days later I finally got my chance to get it in the shop to fix the rim leak, I get in my car in the morning, turn the key, and RURRR click-click-click. Really!? So I take the family Impala to school, missing my opportunity to finally fix my leak. So I still have to pump air in it every week in this amazing weather. Now I still have a tire leak and a possible parasitic load on my hands. The only electrical problem my car has is that the trunk ajar indicator light on the DIC flashes when turning or hitting bumps, which just started two or three weeks ago. "Conveniently" my GP doesn't have a trunk light, so a light in the trunk can't be the problem.

Just tonight I pulled it in the driveway and did a basic alternator test (turning everything on and making sure the voltage stays above 13v) That checked out alright, still have to find the cause of the drain. No reason a 3 month old battery should go dead in 2 days. As I pulled it in the driveway on one tire with 15 psi, it seemed like I had almost no power steering, to the point where I don't think the tire was actually at fault. After inflating the tire with the engine running(warming up a bit), and turning while in park, it still seems underpowered, but not bad. The fluid level was checked a month ago, and was a tad low before topping it up. No noise from the pump, ever.

So that's it for now. Congrats, if you made it this far btw. The point of this, idk. Maybe someone has had one of these problems and has advice. My situation is really pretty good, comparing to seeing people go through 3 transmissions, or putting an engine in, and it going bad in a week. So I'm not complaining, I'm ranting :cool:
 


It sucks doing any sort of repairs but it's expected on 10+ year old car. Things eventually break and need to be replaced. No offense but most everything you have replaced is rather inexpensive. It could be a lot worse like spinning a bearing, blowing a tranny etc. Bulbs are cheap. Speakers are cheap. Lithium grease is cheap. Everyone of us had to change the lim and elbows at some point in time. pcv vlave cheap. Endlinks..cheap. Oil is cheap..just buy when the parts store has a sale...and oil changes is a must. I know it's a rant but you really should look on the bright side of things that nothing you have had to replace so far has been expensive. Besides the rim..that could be pricy. If you shop around and do your own work the parts you replaced could of been cheaper.
 
Yes at the end I stated that, It's really not too bad. I have actually done all of the work myself, so the money spent was very tolerable. It's just the problematic things that surprise me. (trunk light, rim leak, parasitic load, maybe power steering (which got me to this post)) Also my LIM gasket is orange. I read black gaskets will fail again, and aluminum ones are good. What does orange mean? I also see a LIM/UIM gasket replacement in my future because the improved ones weren't used. But that's extremely common.
 
welcome to owning a gp ...but once u get the important things done it will run like a champ ..keep ya head up
 
All the money I threw at my GP last year I finally decided was enough. I'd been using the GP to deliver newspapers, and in addition to not get great gas mileage, it just wasn't made for being loaded down with 400 Sunday newspapers. I had all kinds of front end work done. It ate tires, but really that had more to do with taking turns and cul-de-sacs at 30 miles an hour. I love the GP, but it's just not the right car for what I was using it for. I bought a Mercury Mariner Hybrid a few weeks ago when the last of the credit card bills for GP repairs was done. The payment on the new vehicle was about what I was paying every month for GP repairs. And I'm now saving money on gas because of the hybrid. My goal was to reach 200,000 miles, and I hit that mark earlier this year. So the GP was on borrowed time until I finally found the right replacement vehicle. If I hadn't learned how to do a lot of the work myself, I would have given up a long time ago. It's what happens to a 13 year old car.

Now my Impala, that car won't leave my hands until it's had some serious damage to it. It's my baby. :th_laugh-lol3:
 


You're not in bad shape and although those things seem like a lot. It's all minor. Maybe your expectations are off... A vehicle, ANY vehicle with over 100k is GOING to require some initial maintenance items such as but not limited to, oil/filter change, tranny fluid/filter change, air filter, fuel filter, belts, plugs, wires, struts, springs, tires, a/c recharge, etc. you purchase a vehicle with 100k and no idea how it was maintained regardless of how it looks and you can expect also: a starter, an alternator, fuel pump...

There was a time when 100k was considered end of life for a car... Today, it's mid-life if you are willing to give it some tlc.

You need to learn how to buy parts etc at better prices. Got an Advance Auto, retailmenot.com discount codes will save you a ton.

I have been looking on ebay for parts of the same name brand, and they are about 30% cheaper. I may go that route too.

i thought i found a pretty good deal when i bought my gtp last year. it was a pretty car with no damage, 140k, and for $2400. seemed like a pretty solid deal, i even had it inspected at a shop to see what i was really buying. they provided me almost jack sh1t for real information as i found out after i bought it, the radiator was cracked, ALL of the motor mounts were thrashed, and there were multiple oil leaks. not terrible i guess, but i would have been fuking nice to know that before i bought the car.

so in the year ive had it, ive replaced:

radiator
all motor mounts
alternator
serpentine belt
front brakes
fuel filter
tranny fluid
wheel alingment
sc coupler
sc oil

all seemed to be going well, then i crashed it. had to replace:

windshield
both front tires
control arm
i think tie rods / wheel bearings

still need to replace front struts, passenger light & fog light assembly, bumper, fender, and side skirt. all of this is going to cost $2200 more. dont even wana think about what ive spent since i bought it

i really hope after i undo the damage i did, my car will be happy and wont require a whole lot in the future. its got 155000 now and seems to run fine, except with a terrible high pitched squeaking / grinding noise that only seems to occur when the car first starts up and its cold out, the noise all but disappears when its been running for a while and it warms up outside (idler or tensioner going bad? the sound seems like its coming from the belt area. i dont know). but yeah, thats my rant
 
Yeah that sounds disappointing. You didn't get a bad deal on it to begin with, though. I checked for leaks under my car before buying, as well as test drove it. It made no noises on the test drive, but once I started to drive it, the sway bar links were making all kinds of noise before I replaced them. And to the posts above, when buying my battery I used a $10 off coupon. I get them every month, it helps.
 
Op, sell it and buy a Newer car.

If only it was that easy. I thought I'd get some nibbles on my GP, but I've received a few single emails, then no response after I've responded. A week before my next 6 month insurance payment I'll going to drop the price to nearly the scrap metal price.

Of you just use advance and use a online coupon code...comes out extremely close if not cheaper then Rockauto and no need to wait on shipping and avoid the whole shipping from different places crap you get with RA

i've spent more on fixing my car but it's also three years older and has close to 221,000 miles but i've had to fix less things then you.
