a start year for better 4t65e hd builds from gm?

Is there a year or a point in time where GM started to build the 4t65e-hd better--mainly the fourth gear loss issue?

I'm in the hunt for a new ride and I've had a 99GTP and have a 2000GTP. The 99 got rebuilt at 150k because it essentially completely failed. The 2000 came without 4th and was shifting a bit hard at times and slipping at others until it just quit going into 3rd altogether. Then I put a used 2000 4t5e hd from another 2000GTP in it and it has now lost 4th and is beginning to mimic the other problems of the first 2000. I've also replaced a 97 4t65e on an oldsmobile silhouette that i flipped for profit.

i'm looking into 04 plus gtps and there is also an 03 ssei bonneville on cl for 3500 with 138k. bonnies look cool but also look big.

i love 97-03 gtp but am weary of getting one that hasnt been rebuilt. its just a matter of time it seems. or if i find one for 500-800 that needs one i might do that and have it rebuilt.

are their rebuild kits that are recommended? i've changed them out and i think i could rebuild if i had a place where i could leave it and not be in a hurry to figure it out. but i dont. what would a place like certified transmission do on a rebuild? i live in kc. is there a guru or mom and pop around anyone knows about?

thanks all.

or link if its there's a page for this. i couldnt think of key words other than 4t65e-hd. thought a wiki might help but i didnt find one.

It's a catch 22 for you. Roughly 03' and up has the hardened splines on the 4th clutch hub. Problem is that without some modifications you're not able to put an 03'+ trans into a 2000. IMO the best option is to rebuild with the upgraded part into your current trans.

I've seen 03 builds that had production dates in late (dec) 02 with non hardened shafts. I'm not sure what month they started putting the hardened shafts into them. The word on the street is 03, yet you can have an 03 with non hardened.

Personally for the cost of channel plate gaskets and a hardened 4th. I'd go into a 97-02 and also replace the pcs while you are at it. There is a write up for replacing the 4th hub. It's fairly simple.

rebuild kit = reputable vendor like triple edge performance seems to me you have horrible luck with transmissions and used transmission from a yard is the last place id take my chances......
spend the money on a trans from a welll respected vendor the rest on these cars are cake.
Id put my risk in a used engine over used trans everyday.

Speakin of im currently looking for another 2 door shell engine and trans dont have to work my 2 door got T boned today
Ive been down your road lol clean body and trans after that its cake.

You need to check out Tripleedgeperformance.com

Dave can hook you up with a good trans that will last. Take a look at his website for common issues and rebuild/build prices. You can't go wrong there.

You could score a 97-03 GP that needs a trans for cheap then just swap in the new trans and have a great GP. The Bonne would be more comfy and being S/C'd is a bonus. Your call there.

i wish i had the place and the time to rebuild a different car myself. this car is not worth any type of swap. in fact, all i would do with this car if i were going to use any of it would be the motor and put it into a different car and take the interior out of it. the body isn't worth keeping. it has two good doors i guess and a good fender...... wheels are cool from an 04+.

part of why i ask is what would a shop typically rebuild when they do one? if i could find a good body with a bad tranny i would just pay to have it done. Do they just replace what is "broke" or do they do a pretty comprehensive rebuild? i've looked at new ones but shipping and everything and the cost is getting up there. and i would for sure have to put that in myself.

Majority of trans shops just fix the problem at hand rather than do a full thorough rebuild. Triple Edge Performance goes through everything. If you're at the point of cutting your losses you've gotta make the call on that one. Unless every other part on the car needs replaced, major repairs are in order, or rusted to hell....I'd take a trans swap any day over taking on a car payment.

the car is rusted to crap on pass side. ground effect is coming off and the body behind the splash guard is rotting away. the fender rattles. the bumpers are repaints and the front has a chunk missing. needs struts. needs axle or control arm(s). probably both. the driver back quarter has a huge scratch. someone tried to pry the doors open (theft i guess) and mangled the body above the door and messed the passenger door up. rear driver door has scratches and small dents. needs ac compressor. does have new condenser:)

dont ask why i own this car:( i did win the case, though.
