Loud grinding noise when I punch the gas! (2005 Grand Prix GT)

Hello everyone,

I'm going to get right into the point...my car has been making a loud grinding noise when I punch the gas for about two months now. If I am traveling behind someone and punch it to pass them, it makes that loud noise. If I am sitting at a stop sign and punch it, it makes that noise. I have no idea what it could be, and before I take it to the mechanic to get checked out and get charged $80 dollars for someone to just look and see what it is, I was hoping the Grand Prix community could help me with this. The noise doesn't occur when I take off normally, and/or drive normally. I do not see any difference with the transmission shifting...it shifts as normal as can be. And when I say "grinding" its the best word I can use. It's more of a rapid tick/tap grinding noise. It has been two months before this post, and I am just getting around to finally wanting to figure it out.

I did do a search before putting this up on here, but it didn't find anything for me. If you know of another thread that might be worded differently and has the answer, that would be awesome. Any help is very appreciated. My car has other unknown problems too, but for right now, this noise is my main concern.

Thanks,
Josh

post a vid, that may help out. from what your saying it could be anything from motor mounts the the exhaust, to the pulleys on the engine.

You waited two months to try and identify a grinding noise? Hmmmm... Yet, LOVE your car! Hahaha, yeah, ok, doesn't sound like love to me. ;)

Anyways... It's impossible to try and identify a NOISE without a sample. Post vid or fork over the $80 to let someone who can hear the grinding try to identify it. Either way, grinding is never normal or good, I would've immediately attended to it.

Thanks for the comments... I'll check in to see what was suggested and once I find out, I will put the answer on here. I did get the car an inspection about 4 months ago, and was told that it needed new motor mounts. He said it's not a big concern now, but will eventually need repair. Maybe it's time to get that done. How would old
motor mounts make the car sound like that?

pop your hood, start the car. then shift from park, to reverse, then to drive, watch the engine. is if jerking a lot when shifted?

you can also have some one else shift it, stand at the front bumper, if the engine twists in the bay, the mounts are real shot. mine was doing this.

what mine looked like. this is really shot.

is it leaking/losing coolant?

is it leaking/losing coolant?

Yes. I have a check engine light on right now. It happens every winter though. I live in the south; so for the 3 months that it is semi-cold, the check engine light comes on for the coolant. It doesn't leak like crazy, but it does leak very little as time goes on. The code goes off for either the thermostat, coolant reader, or coolant level is low. I know its not the thermostat because my temperature gauge stays at a normal setting, but it might be the coolant reader because I filled the coolant the other day, and the check engine light came on again. I checked it and it was still pretty full. The engine light also comes and goes. It will stay on for like 7 days, and then turn off for 2. It just came back on three days ago again.

As for the engine mounts. The mechanic said that they did need to be replaced due to the feel of the car when he shifted from park to drive.

Thanks for the comments and looking forward to other ones.

Josh

Did you use straight water in the cooling system?

If your motor mounts are really bad, under WOT your engine will have a lot of movement. That movement can easily cause binding in the axles or transmission.

But I agree with everyone else, please get a vid of it an post it.
