NEED HELP! with 2004 Grand Prix after market radio install.

I recently purchased and installed a new pioneer head unit in a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix. I was informed by Crutchfield.com (where I purchased the deck and all installation parts from) that I would need a special adapter or harness to go with it which I also purchased and installed. The harness that I was informed to purchased was the CRUX SOCGM-17 06-Up GM Class II DataBus Intrfc w/Chime. I drove the car to work the next morning for the first time since the install and experienced the issues with the gauges. The gauges worked for about the first 10 miles then went off and then would come back on after a few seconds or sometimes several minutes. The speedometer is the only thing that continued to work and never went out.. The fuel gauge, tachometer, and temperature gauges would all stop working at the same time and the traction control symbol and light would also come on. The car seems to be running perfectly, other than the gauges, and the Pioneer head unit is functioning without any issues as well. I placed a call to the Crutchfield Tech Support department and the rep suggested to unhook the harness and then reconnect it and if that didn't work to unhook the orange illumination cable. All of my connections seem to be solid and the orange illumination wire was never connected to anything. After unhooking the harness and checking my connections I have the same exact issue. I have never worked with these special harnesses required for GM vehicles before and I am not sure if perhaps I got a dud. The harness comes with the door chime box which seems to chime and work when it is supposed to, however the sound is very very faint. I do not know how loud the CRUX harness is supposed to sounds so any info on that would also be great. I plan on placing another call in to the Crutchfield tech support department later this afternoon to see what they have to say.

Thanks in advance for any and all help on this.

I ran into this exact issue. There are three major brands of GM interface harnesses. Metra Scoshe, and CRUX. I purchased a scosche from walmart and has this exact problem. You NEED the Metra interface, which crutchfield offers. I purchased my setup from them along with the Metra GMOS-04 and it has worked beautifully.

The databus in these cars is in the radio, the interface acts as an emulator would. I talked to someone at a local car audio shop, he told me that in many cases, the cheap interfaces can shutdown the PCM (kill your gauges, along with other uglier problems, it can even overheat your engine by knocking the temperature sensor offline and failing to start the engine fans), and in some cases, mostly on GM trucks, it can FRY the pcm.

You should return the CRUX interface, (i know it was cheaper) and get the Metra. The chimes are still faint (only when the engine is on for some reason), but it does what its supposed to and keeps the computer happy.

Good Luck!

Sorry for double post, a couple more ideas that Ive heard.

If you are handy with wiring, you can make a splitter so you have two radio ports. Keep your factory radio plugged in and turned off and put it in the glovebox, install your new head unit normally. This will keep the databus powered up so that your DIC date will still work.

If you trust your battery, you can make a harness and plug the car's 12V Constant wire into the new radios 12V switched line. If you go this route, be mindful to turn your radio off when you shut the car off, as it will continue to draw power constantly. A small load to keep the display lit will not drain the battery enough to prevent starting (unless your battery is old and weak and its very cold out), but full blast with thumping bass will leave you stuck.

Basically, the car can run with or without the databus (your pcm will not be affected) but if you use a cheap Chinese made interface that poorly mimics the data bus, it will get the pcm all pissed off.

Hey can you help me. I have the exact same problem but I do have metra hardness. And the car still do the same thing as yours trentonio.

I don't think anyone has. Some have theirs work for a year others have issues immediately. It all seems to be a crap shoot.

I was going to try the Scosche GM06b radio relocation harness and keep the stock radio in the trunk and rewire my ASWC-1 into the factory harness.

I wonder if I should have bought GMRC-02 rather than the GMOS-01 because I don't have On-Star...I really didn't think it would make a difference.

I tried the PAC unit and had the same problem. Switched to Metra GMOS-04 and the only remaining issue is that I cant set the date anymore. Everything else has been working great for over a year now. The sound is even better than it was with the PAC unit. I also got the Metra steering wheel control unit (the preset and band buttons switched, but I was too lazy to reprogram them).
