Build Thread: Addicted to L67's~updated 4/6/2013

Re: Build Thread: The Fiero from Hell!

Nice build. I have a question irrelevant to anything else, but are you using one of those "electronic clip onto ratchet torque things"? Is it accurate?

Yes I am using a cheap harbor freight digital torque adapter. I was going to spend a ton of money on a nice fancy torque wrench until I talked to a friend of mine who works at Lockheed Martin (a aeronautical development base near where I live) he told me he had tested one of these, and it is extremely accurate. Half of the time you are paying for a name, although this is not always true and sometimes you have to spend the money to get quality. I have tested tons of things from Harbor Freight and it really is hit or miss. I have had excellent luck with most all of there hand tools and other mechanical equipment, but I am a firm believer of DeWalt power tools. Let the flaming of my willingness to experiment with cheap tools commence!

Lol. I didn't mean to start a potential pissing match. Ever since they put up a harbor freight a year or two ago I've spend every extra dime there with awesome luck. Their pliers sucked for me but everything else had been just as good as my name brand tools. I didn't spend the money on a torque wrench till Black Friday at sears. Before that I was wondering about that adapter thing you have. Ill prolly go buy one and test it out.

Re: Build Thread: The Fiero from Hell!

Haha thanks. My bedroom is a finished 14x20 room in the corner of the unfinished basement/shop, so I literally sleep where I work! I can look out my bedroom door and see the car sitting there :P The shop is quite a mess right now, but at least it is warm, and pretty spacious. Our home is bi-level so the basement is accessible through a garage door around back. Here's some pics for ya of my work space.

"the workshop"
step dad and myself are both union sheetmetal workers and have a variety of hand made HVAC fittings from our apprenticeships, and we plan on putting them on display up on a shelf around the work area :P

Dang that really makes me wish I could live out in town rather than in these stupid barracks. We aren't supposed to work on cars in parking lot...not saying we don't though. Only good part about here is the on base shop with tons of bays and lift and every tool u could ever need for any job

Yeah that is what I want. An actual auto shop... some day lol

I just don't wanna be fold where I have to live so I can have a basement shop like that. And its nice having that shop but the mechanics that work there suck. Their just there to make sure everything goes good and no one gets hurt. But they think they know everything. Tried to tell me my tranny would only hold 3 quarts of tranny fluid! I mean what the heck

Re: Build Thread: The Fiero from Hell!

Back from a good vacation up north to Michigan! Haven't been in the shop for weeks now, but got a little done today.
did some porting work on the last head, just need to touch up two bowls and I should be done with it finally.

got around to painting the blower, also changed the oil and put it back together finally after shortening two bolts (needed to be done because of my port job)

the top end should look really nice once put back together. The bottom end will be painted Chevrolet red-orange, although now I am having second thoughts about my polished aluminum valve covers. Just might be a little too much shine for the engine bay. We will get a better idea once it is l painted and put together.

Re: Build Thread: The Fiero from Hell!

Question: if I just have my heads on the motor will a compression/leak down test be accurate? Since I installed new valves without having any work done to the heads or valves themself I am curious about this.

Re: Build Thread: The Fiero from Hell!

Still looking for a reputable machine shop in my area. Half temped just to mail them back home to Michigan where I know some good shops are. Got bored and did a quick mock-up of the motor. Looks pretty damn good if you ask me.

The paint cap is what color I plan on painting my heads/block.

Re: Build Thread: The Fiero from Hell! Last update 1/12/2013

Nice mockup, gonna be a great looking motor in the car.

Just curious tho, why are you running a oil cap filter? It will allow unmetered air into the crankcase. Not necessary unless you are running specific mods, a regular cap would be the way to go.

Guess I will read up on that. It was like that when I got it. If I don't need it that is a plus because I would like one of those shiny eBay ones! Lol
