2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Supercharger

I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Supercharger with only 84,000 miles. In the morning I start the car up and put into drive and the car acts like I'm pushing the brake and gas pedal and barely moves. I have to put the car into reverse and drive backward maybe 5-10 feet and the car will bump/jump. Then I can put into drive and move forward. For the first few stops it will lurch forward when coming to a stop and bump/jump on take off. It does this for maybe the first 5-10 mins of driving and then the car performs well the rest of the day. Until you let it set for a while. Am I having transmission slippage?

Sorry no lights on. Not even check engine light. AAMCO says the transmission is going bad. But I've been told also that maybe the transmission fluid needs to be changed along with the filter. It's sort of brown right now.

yes, thats the problem. you need to fix the trac off light being on all the time problem. you should be able to turn it off and on at will.

most of the time the abs light, and the trac off lights come on, but trac off can also cause these problems. does the steering get stiff as well? until it pops free?

if it sounds like ive seen this problem before, its cause my car does it once a month. has something to do with the abs check, ( that crunching sound you hear when you first drive off) for some reason it fails in the first 10 feet of driving, and then it feels like the cars been tied to a stump. im still unsure if its the trans, or the brakes holding the car back.

but stopping, turning the car off, key out, door open, close the door fire it back up and drive, and 99% of the time it will pop free and drive off like normal.

if you cant find a bad hub on the car, id have it scanned at a shop. they can tell you exactly where the problem is.

Sorry I don't have any lights on on my dash. But it does feel like something is holding the car back from moving like the emergency brake is on. So if this hub is the problem why does it only do this when the car has been sitting. Also why is AAMCO saying visually that its a transmission problem.

I don't understand how this could be a hub problem. The car won't engage into drive when its cold. The only way to get it to move forward is to put it into reverse. Then the car will jump/bump and you can put it into drive and move forward.

if the shop only "looked" at it, like did not scan it or drive it.....they know as much as you about your problem.

i did not see that it wont move in drive at first at all????(in the first post) like it revs freely? or does it feel like your holding the brakes hard in gear and giving it gas? so the tach only goes up to say 2200 rpm?

have it scanned by a shop that can scan for abs codes, and body codes, you can try auto zone and see if their scanner picks up anything, chances are it wont.

you could have a bad abs module or bcm.

But why am I being to this is a transmission issue. An not by tranny shops. Friends and family are saying this. Auto Zone claims that if the check engine light ain't on it won't bring up any codes.

I have a feeling this is something with the tranny too. Sounds like it has a hard time getting into the gears. What's it feel like when you shift around with your floor shifter? Does the car shake bad when you switch them around?

it can pick up stored codes, and i dont think its the tranny really. seems odd that it would hold back like that, but if you back up, it free's up, then drives just perfect? seems odd.

same thing happens to my car, my original trans blew up, it did it back then, used tranny in now for the last year, and it still does it once in a blue moon. but i feel it trip when it fails the abs check.

Its the 2004 with manuel shift on the steering column and automatic. The shifting feels fine. It's just getting it going in the morning.
No shake other than once you get going it will jump at the first stop and take off. But after 5-10 minutes of driving its fine.

id have the car fully scanned, if a trans shop hooks a scanner up to the car, they will know whats going on inside, they should also be able to read abs or body codes, if not stop by a body shop, they have all that stuff there. ( collision type shop)

whats the miles and hows the fluid look? still red? or dark and burnt looking? and is the fluid full when hot?

The guy at AAMCO said he couldn't see through metal and made no suggestion of hooking a scanner to the car. All he said was it was going to cost $690 just to drop and open the tranny. The fluid is a light brown color right now.

try another shop, they can scan and see line pressure, and see if solenoids are working right or not. sounds like he was busy, or just likes to sell trannys.

wouldn't it suck if he rebuilt it and it was something else?

miles on the car?

is the fluid full?

To me it sounds like a tranny problem. But that could be because for me, when something is wrong with my car, it is never the possible easier fix. To add, he said his fluid is brown.

I know that feeling when you put your car into D, try and go, but your car struggles to actually go. When that happens to me, I either put it back into park, then retry putting into D, and wait so I can for SURE feel it shift properly. It happens to my boyfriends 07 GP every now and then. Or sometimes, I am holding the gas petal down to go, and the car wont, until it will suddenly really jerk itself into 1st gear and go.

It probaby starts working normal once everything is nice and warmed up.

Are you still rolling backwards when you throw it into drive? Or do you actually completely stop before you shift it?
