Put 18.14 gallons in tonight?

I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation for this but just got done with a long trek and filled up. DIC said I spent 16.6 gas pump said I put in 18.14. Someone is lying to me!

Although I must say my milage has been off since I put new tires on. Figured that was due to them being slightly taller then the old set though. On this tank I made it 411 miles and DIC said I averaged 24.4 when normally on this kind of trip it should have been more like 26-28. Any thoughts?

What size tires are you running?

I know when my brother had his lifted Jeep the tripometer would register 1.1 miles for every true mile driven. That's a little extreme example considering the upping in tire size he had, but its an example.

Also I could see putting an extra gallon in the neck. If you were way low it is possible to put 18 gallons into a 17 gallon tank.

Well I know we have 18 gallon tanks, my new tire size is the same as most of us run 245/45/18 I know I was low just cause I drive a lot and just kinda know where the tank is at. Unfortunately my gas gauge has been broken since I purchased the vehicle (Heh one of those things ya just never test when buying a car) so I have always relied on the Trip and the DIC.

I figured some may have back logged into the neck, but its just really close. And as far as the mileage being off, I was getting 450 a tank and now based on the numbers I posted there is no way im getting 450 a tank.

Hrmmmmm.....

Your first mistake is thinking a gauge is super accurate. It's not..it's a relative idea. Second is knowing you modified something w/o changing the calculation that the pcm uses to calculate things.

A + B will never equal C if you change B to D

245/45/18 isn't any taller than stock so your mileage is correct. And your mileage will suffer due to the winter mix of gas as well as cooler temps.

For less time that this whole fuel level inquiry has taken you could have fixed the fuel gauge that hasn't worked since you have owned the vehicle...
Go through trunk, pull fuel accses hatch and install new float/sending unit on bucket.
It's on the 97 right...ask me how I know lol

I looked into and the only teaching tool I found was for a Bonnie and the process seemed really complicated. I thought the fuel tank access was under the rear passenger seat. Ill check it out and see if I can replace that float. Regardless I am curious about the math cause obviously its really off.

And I usually let the tank run to 16 and then fill im pretty religious about that as I dont want the fuel system to get screwed up. Thats why im wondering about everything. I drive more then most trust me, so im pretty in tune with my car well when it comes to gas anyways. So believe me I was more then surprised when I saw that I put in 18+ gallons in.

If anyone has more on that fuel gauge fix please feel free to post up

16.8 is a full tank + the fuel neck. I ran my car down to what I thought was bone dry turns out I still had about 2 gallons left in the tank.

Where do you go? I'm in the Portland area. I could possibly help you with the swap. I might even have a fuel float assembly you can use

Im in real estate and I drive up and down Puget sound all week long, I sell bank owned homes so im pretty busy.

Update on the fuel situation or rather info on todays fill up

DIC said I spent 15.1

I put in 15.12

372 Miles on the Trip

DIC said 24.5mpg

I guess this thing has a mind of its own

My DIC is never right on MPG. It's a calculation based on driving conditions. Its not based on miles driven per gallons used.
