Opinions on Dex 6...

Bringing this back from the dead.... Does anyone have a specific brand they use? I used Castrol Dex6 last time and less than 20k on the fluid its black. I want to change it out next week, just dont know what to get.

Yeah... Use anything but what you used last time... Lol

Agree if it's black, not good, but do the pan drop and see if there's any bits in there too. Maybe some fresh slippery stuff is just what the doctor ordered. At this point you got nothing to lose, lol.

Ya your tranny is FUBAR'd. I would suggest another pan drop and Dex3 with maybe some Lucas additive or w/e the additive is for slipping tranny's and hope like hell it works, but then again I argued this a year ago and I don't know what I'm talking about.

There is nothing wrong with Castrol dex 6. I've used it for the past year and after the first pan drop after about 15k..it was as red and smelled as fresh as if I just poured it out of the bottle.

I use Valvoline because it is full synthetic. I've also used GM stuff from the dealer. IMO, it is more important that you change the fluid regularly than the brand of fluid. But if your fluid is black in that short of time, you probably have clutches wearing and you won't be long before a rebuild is in store.

Yeah, no surprise that the soft parts are failing. I will just change it out and ride it till it needs an overhaul.

Use this....Did a shift on my newer trans......Nice shifts. No issues whatsoever. And it is official GM spec fluid.:th_thumbsup-wink:

LOL, each trans is different to a degree. With a higher mileage trans, I'd say go with whatever you want to and a bottle of Lucas. The Lucas will thicken up the fluid and help seals etc. Also has some form of a friction modifier in it to help the clutches grab. To give you guys an idea though..

My third and fourth clutches in Bonne were shot at 176 when I had the trans rebuilt. However for the nearly stock level of power I was putting down (pulley, intake and headers) it was sloppy and held fine.

Even this nearly shot 4th hub was holding.

So I noticed that my dipstick said use Dex 3 on it last night. For it being an 05 I was confused. Maybe they just recycled parts on the production line?

Or you can just go to a dealer and get 2 Gallons of Dex6 ATF....

GM# 88861954 for Gallon - Retail $30.89
GM# 88861037 for Quarts- Retail $ 8.63

Alot of Dealerships will give a break tho so could be less.

EDIT: BTW Before anyone says but ZZP sales it cheaper. Add shipping to that. To me shipping is an additional $8.80 on top of the $22.49 its $31.29 per gallon... or you can go to a local Dealership and probably save some money. If you want the AcDelco Dex6

dex 6 came out in 2005..but, your car being an 05 wouldnt have gotten that yet.

Looked at the door sticker my car is actually a 2004 but was sold as an 05.

I get it for $21 a jug with my uncles employee discount w/ GM. I am going to look up "do it at home flushing". I read about disconnecting the cooler lines and running the car till it goes dry.. but something about that makes me unsettled.

if you fill a 5 gallon bucket with clean new fluid, and have another empty 5 gallon bucket, you can take the lines off and run hoses to the buckets, let one suck up the new fluid and the other to dump the old into. when you see new fluid come out turn the car off, hook it all back up, run it a few minutes, then check and fill as needed.

if you have air blow out the cooler in the rad.

i did the method you described with my brother in his Yukon you start the car let it pump till you see bubbles, shut it off, add 4 quarts, do it again, till you see bubbles. repeat till you've gone through 8 quarts or so.

you need clear tubing to see the bubbles, his lines were bolt on, so we picked up a fitting that had a nipple for the tube, and threaded onto the trans line, it was a neat job too, not much mess wise at all.

I know of many guys even 4T60's using Dex 6 and reporting better shifts and cooler temps. Seems good. Walmart has a good priced in house brand of it that most are using and like.

I run this, it's called "Super Tech" and it's great stuff. No problems in either of my vehicles. At the cheaper price, you can afford to change it more often. Meets GM specs, so why not?

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but the 4T65E has only minor changes between 03 and 04... so if Dex 6 is fine in the new models, it's probably just fine in the older models. And vice versa. Someone correct me on this if that's not the case.
