Problems when installing headers?

On thurs im doing my first header install and ya i know bill wrote a guide for this and i have read it.
Basicly my stock cat went this week and its perfect cus i ordered my sd headers the day befor. I live in mass and its very strict here. So anyway my question is i want to delete my egr and i got some blockoffs from zzp. How will this effect my car i know ill lose some mpg but is this going to make my car run rich and will a code get thrown cus zzp states it doesnt. Next i obviously have to have a cat due to the fact if they look under my car. Now on zzp they say they can delete the egr and cat codes but i was just reading a thread how even if the cat code is it still causes the car to run rich due to it still trying to read values on 01+ cars? So i thought ill just get a $80 magnaflow cat form advanced but will this throw a code? Also is it a 3" one that i need and how long?

I did an egr delete on a 98 throws the code till it gets tuned lost about 1mpg maybe a lil more still relearning pcm the fuel trims on mine are right where they are suppose to be though so I don't think its trying to run rich anyway
 
if they look under the hood, they need to see a egr. so to take it off block the holes with a coin and some rtv, bolt the egr back up. now its un hooked and still passes inspection, provided you have the code set to not report via a tune.

some states do. i do believe billboost has had his set up like this because CT looks under the hood. i would think MASS is as bad or worse.
 
To the OP, I just did an install with basically the same headers. Here's my 2¢:

Bill's guide is very helpful. I recommend following it closely. However, I found that driving up on ramps worked just as well as using jack stands at the drip points.

Use band clamps rather than the clamps the kit comes with. I got it to seal fine with the kit's clamps, but it just looked crummy. The band clamps look a lot nicer and will be more leak resistant.

Also, the SD kit comes with a straight pipe that might go in the place of a cat. Measures 11" long, so you'd need a cat smaller in length unless you want to cut out some of the "bend pipe" in the downpipe as well.

That's all I can think of atm. I left the egr alone because, imo, the benefits or removing it aren't worth the hassle when the headers are compatible with it.

ya i ordered the clamps and i know how to install the things but thankyou for the size on the cat thats very helpful
but asfar as the benifits of removing egr i kind of disagree, sure ill get worse gas mileage but to me thats worth the hot carbon shooting back into your intake.... What is kr and what is it caused by? so ya im removing it
 
The purpose of an EGR is to allow some exhaust gas into the combustion chambers under cruise and decel in order to displace some oxygen and fuel. Aka .. helps with mileage. You likely won't notice a huge drop in mileage though.

As for codes, that's easy enough to work with. I have both DHP and HPT and can easily do that. Hell..if I didn't want my egr to work and knew I needed it for emissions visual inspection (depends on where you go in mass) I'd simply tell it not to run. You could also block the tubes, but that's more of a pain then if you say had the LIM off and decided to plug it internally. I did on the Bonne with JB weld due to an IC. Right.. IC with EGR sitting there..classic.

On the cat, you need a cat that will work for you. I'm not as up to speed on which ones will work for the cat diagnostic test. However the codes can be tuned to no report. The diagnostic still runs and if the cat isn't up to par.. you'll run super rich due to the diagnostic continually running.
 
thankyou bill thats what i thought i dont have inspection for a year so im ok for now i was just trying to get an idea of how it will effect my actual car, Ill see what the cat does. As for egr ill block it off and leave the actual egr there for now but will the wire still being connected effect anything?
 


if you block off the holes and put the egr back, plugged in or not its now going to set the code. you need to have the code tuned to not report.
