XPZ vs XP

Hey there guys I need some insight before I purchase the right cam for my build.

Current car specs

98 GT
112K miles
Pacesetter headers
Full exhaust
Bored over .030

Mods waiting to go on the car (Top swap of course)

Gen v SC w 2.7 pulley and lim
N* set up
ZZP stage 3 IC core with stage 2 FMHE
LS7 lifters
L67 PNP heads with 105# hardened retainers and steel valves
(Double roller or single roller?)
42.5# injectors
ZZP modded fuel rail
8 rib set up
ZZP plug wires
AEM wideband


Any ideas on which cam I should go with?
Its going to be a DD.
I am afraid that the XPZ might be a little TOO aggressive.
I would like to get some opinions on what one I should pick...

Another cam thread? Ok, it all depends on what you're after. The XP is great for a daily driver and isn't too lopey. The XPZ is geared more towards higher RPM operation, is much more lopey, and will probably cause an idle surge. Both cams have high power potential depending on what you want to do. I opted for the XP after driving a car with one. I really liked where the cam made its useful power.
 
It's not necessarily the power difference as much as where it is useful. We need more power in the mid-range for the street...since the XPZ is geared towards higher end power, it kinda makes it less fun. Unless of course, you constantly live above 4000 RPM. The XPZ is capable of more power because of the high RPM nature and other attributes of the cam profile, but the XP will give you about 80% of that power at a lower RPM. So figure maybe 25-30 WHP difference.
 
I am getting a good deal on an XPZ with rods, so I am trying to weigh the pros and cons, I do most of my racing on the streets, so living above 4K is probably where I am at most of the time lol
 


If that's what you like to do then go XPZ. Get the double roller, have the crank sprocket machined correctly to correct the chain geometry, get the heads done properly for the XPZ, get yourself a built trans, IC setup, the whole works and go out and race things.
 
Well my goal is to see mid to low 12s.... if my set up is capable of that with the XP then I can settle with that and a single roller
 
Why no custom grind?

Why no S1X or IS3?

Why no turbo setup that won't cost as much as that blower setup and make more power?

Just playing devil's advocate brah. I loved my XP. XPZ doesn't impress me. But then again, neither does most blower setups because the money poured into them and they still don't break 375~400 WHP.
 
I didnt do much research on the turbo set up, i plan on top swapping myself, the turbo build would be too tough for me, and even so I would not k now where to start and how much the kit will run me.
 


Look at it this way.

ZZP's base Z3 kit on a GT (for around two grand or less if you can find stuff used...which is the way to go IMO) with the addition of some crap EBay intercooler and piping you can fab up yourself for cheap = 350+ WHP when running over 12~ psi I'd imagine.

Also, only thing about that is you have to remove the downpipe, tuck some harness' away from the turbo, and other small crap.

No head removal.

No balancer removal.

Everything stays on, as do the fluids...well minus the oil change because you have to run a feed line from the pan level sensor.

I'd venture to say it is quiet easier to do than a top swap IMO.

I've done a couple Top Swaps...they aren't fun. I'd rather pull the motor than do that crap in the car.
 
Ugh it just sucks I went trough 8 months of friggin headaches with my 02 GTI build, i freaking hated working on it, but see here, just because i get the turbo kit doesnt mean I should keep everything else stock does it? Will i benefit by using my l67 PNP heads with 105# springs? Should I still do LS7 lifters? single roller? Obviously kit doesnt come with a cam, going to need that too.... idk where to start
 


If you run the ported L67 heads, you'll need the blower case and block off the rotor pack....since the injector bosses are in the heads...or you can still run the N/A top end if you have the injector holes welded shut in the N/A LIM....and this single roller kick is meh. Run a new stock chain and dampner...don't run a dumb low idle like I did and you'll be fine. Plenty of failure rates with single and double rollers...

Ask my two crank gears how I know.

Top swap in car is easy. Only time consuming bits are wiring harness modifications and headers.

And removing the heads is fun?

Its easy, 8 bolts per head and it pops right off.

The only painful part I had last time around was home ported heads. They aren't joking when they say most will give up. Luckily I had four months.
 
Save your money. Buy used turbo kit and get a built trans. You will thank me later.

--I should have done that and I have a top swap. I think a lot of people would say the same thing.
 
Wait.. Wtf?

Why would you use l67 heads? Then you have to top swap it anyways.

Leave everything alone, only reason to modify the valve train is if you did a cam or rockers.

The 350 whp nick said, is with stock cam.. You add even just a gt cam to it.. You're looking at around 400 whp
