2013 GT500 Launch Control

Ford and SVT engineers offer a lesson in how the new GT500 "hooks, digs, and goes." Turns out it's no small feat to get 650+ horsepower to the pavement, and the piece definitely makes you appreciate how indispensible these meticulously calibrated nannies really are. We also love how Ford, though it just released the video, kept the Carroll Shelby segments intact: right up until the end, the guy was hunting down the most innovative ways "to leave a Corvette in the dust at a stop sign." Hit the jump to watch!

Love the fact that it shows Carroll Shelby, thought it would interesting to share.

Yea this new shelby is amazing, i mean the numbers speak for the car. It can beat most ferraris in accelaration and 1/4 mile. And how much is it??? Under 60k!

First thing I would do if dragging is make sure the launch control is OFF.

Riiiiiiiight. You clearly don't understand how it works. It isn't the tranny shelling program setup that the Nissan GT-R came with, and it isn't just traction control. You setup what RPMS you want to launch at and it setups to allow the most traction without breaking them loose and adjusts the torque management so you can get the most out of it, until you shift to second. then i think it's all yours.

If you tried without launch control on the new GT500 you would likely get a really good smoke show, have horrible times, or end up like the corvette i showed the other day.

Tech has come a long way relative to traction but I won't trust it until it has been properly tested...like in the real world.

And it doesn't go 202mph...or 200mph for that matter. At least on a 3+ mile straight.

C&D tested it...and at the rate it was accelerating at 189 MPH (pulling .004g's), they calulated it would take another...what 4+ miles to get there.

Tehlies.

Still a $70k+ Mustang.

Lol still looks better than a fifth gen though ;p

You need to go 200 mph why exactly? Unless its in the 1/4 mile i have no desire to go even close to 200mph.

I wouldn't mind running 200+ in a 1 mile course in a car that could, but otherwise I agree. If it won't do it in the 1/4 whats the point. Its fast in the 1/4 for a stock car, regardless of the price, what does it cost to get a comparable Corvette, $140,000 for the ZR1? or 70k for the GT500. I just like the Launch Control feature for the 6-spd

I'd be willing to bet a Z06 would still run it down.

Thing weighs 3800+lbs...Z06 is what...nearly 600lbs less?

Whoopeeee

Because that was the massive advertisement behind this car.

THE OMGzzzz200PLUSWHORESPOWAAHRustang.

So basically.

Another lie.

That's all, no biggie.

Damn it GM, you are just kicking yourself in the ass trying to make the camaro faster than the mustang yet slower than the corvette.

ZL1 is faster around a road course though.

"if you'll notice the competition, they don't have the sophistication that we have"

That's why the ZL1's mag suspension allows the heavier boat to outrun the lighter, more powerful GT500 in a road course situation.

Yaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy advertising.

I fail to see how this video is worth watching unless they show three 60' times with and without launch control.

Otherwise, its again, hype and advertisement.

Does this new 'stang still have a POS floating rear axle?

If it does, I wouldn't even want to go 150 mph in it let alone 200 !!!

Wait there was a video i saw recently these private testers got the GT500 up to 196.6 mph, close enough. The driver did estimate that in another mile it would probably top 200+.

That was at high elevation and really hot weather (Arizona). It is a 200mph car and is super steady at speed. Pobst was the one driving it for that test. Anyway, just remember, the GT500 is the most powerful V8 from a mass produced car, it's under $60k, and has no gas guzzler tax.

As far as ZL1 vs GT500: ZL1 won on the road course because the GT500 lacked the Boss 302 brake ducts. You can add them yourself, but a big oversight on Ford's part. It DID outrun the ZL1 on the road course for a single lap. But subsequent laps overheated the brakes and they lost their bite. Does the ZL1 handle better? Yeah. Is the Ford faster? Yeah. This is the most refined live axle ever put on a production car and that's no small feat. After 2014 it will be gone though. In the end: pick your poison, were all winners.
