Subwoofer suggestions?

Right now, i have a 1000watt amp, going into a vented box of 2 12inch woofers. I was thinking about selling the box and keeping the amp, then getting a smaller single sub. The box weighs SO MUCH and i honestly hate feeling like there's an extra fat person sitting in my trunk. If i got something smaller, it would be lighter. I don't exactly know what to do though? Should i get a single 8,10, or 12 inch? I was probably gonna sell my box for somewhere around $200 then use that extra money towards a smaller set up in the trunk. Also, is it bad using a 1000 watt amp with only 1 little sub? I know it's bad if you have 2 giant subs and then a tiny amp, but is it bad if its the other way? I'm new to all of this stuff also, please don't destroy me if I'm wrong about things lol.

What type of music are you listening to?

Doesn't matter. Tuning is key.

And unless it's a pretty damn quality box tuned at a preferable rating, no one will pay $200 for a used one. I can get a prefab box for $70 vented for 2 12s, why would I pay $200 for one?

If you're looking for a basic but quality setup, get an SA-10 or SA-12. They're 600RMS, and if you set your gains correctly on your amp, you should power it easily without putting strain on the sub or amp and it'll last you forever.

Another question... list your amp model. 4 channel vs mono, AB vs D, 1000W Peak vs 1000W RMS, all makes a difference. I used to have an amp that said 1000w on the top plate but it was a Pyramid and was really about 100-200 watts RMS.

I have 2 10'' kicker comp VR's in a ported box. I was asking what type of music he listened to because 10's are perfect, unless you really want to get that super low tone like in some harder rap music. My 10's are louder than most 12's I've heard. The 10's sound so much cleaner and tighter than those 12's.

thats cause pyrimid sucks, if you get a JL amp and it says 1000w it most likely going to be close to 1000w

Well right now my car is currently in the shop so i'll have to get back to you tomorrow on the name. And ah i see about the price my bad, i thought $200 was okay! Guess not though, which is fine. I listen to most all metal, I'm not too into rap. All i know that the 2 12s are incredibly loud with extreme amounts of bass but i'll have to get back to you tomorrow!

Or you could buy a kicker amp. I have a 1000.1 zx amp. It says its rated at 1000watts, but they're underrated. Mine came with a certificate saying it was tested to be over 1200... i don't remember the exact number.

And thats even if he wants to buy a new amp.

Yeah I listen to a lot of metal to and 10's are perfect for that. Bass drum hits sound a lot tighter if you know what I mean. Some of my buddies have 12's when I listen to metal in their cars it'll sound like a pulsing wall of bass, as apposed to what its supposed to sound like if their was any double peddle action going on.

I 100% understand what you mean. With my subs, when some double bass kicks in its kinda...."blurry"? My buddy has two 8s and its really crisp.

Yeah we're on the same page. 10's will also be a little lighter mine weigh around 80 i think, without include the rest of the equipment.

I do agree with this, mostly. Again, tuning makes a HUGE difference.
Even turning my subs in a different direction totally changed the "muddiness" double-bass kicks have in metal music.

But yeah, get back to us on that amp, and as far as size, a 10 or two should be great, and for metal, I'd just drop them in a sealed box, more "punchy" and crisp, not as obnoxious. Ported boxes will make it muddier if it's not tuned right, and with a prefab box, that's easy to have happen.

Exactly what amp is it? Because lots of amps say that they are 1000w, and actually only do 300 actual rms. And if you are looking for a Single 12 I'd go with a sa-12, and get a 4th order bandpass built for it. Very musical Box.

Read the rest of the posts, he's looking to go light. 4th order is going to be heaaavy.

i would go sundown for sure, sa-8 are great too. dc level 5 or so would do too

Less surface area, must move more to displace same volume of air.

How many subs do you know with a high quality suspension and motor designed around control and sound quality between 70-100% of Xmax?

If you get into nicer subs, they'll significantly more than your standard entry level sub.

Also look into Fi Car Audio. Scott is great to deal with. Made in the USA is tough to find as well.

That's not specific to size...that's specific to whether the speaker was installed correctly and how well the mids play with the subwoofer. If the subs and mids aren't matched well in terms of output then it will sound sloppy. But, what you two are observing is specific to cone size in a sense that a smaller cone does not displace as much energy and therefore, the mids are a closer "match" when looking at a response curve; i.e. sub playing at 140 decibels vs. mids playing 100 decibels. That huge discrepency results in a very skewed response curve. A kick drum plays all the way up through 8khz. So it starts with the sub...plays through the mid...and finishes in the tweeter. If all those speakers are dialed in correctly then you'll get a nice kick in your chest ;)

EDIT: Doh!! Matt got to it before me...and as always...directly to the point :>

My NSv2 weights 60.1lbs, your little Kicker weights 13lbs...

if you want to save weight use Birch wood not MDF

as far as the size of a sub effecting what it will play.... That's mostly BS its all on the box as to what it will play. For the ported box making everything "muddier" False a nice Flat response box will sound so much better than a sealed box (sealed will be peaky too it goes off the car).

In my GP Coupe i run a 15" Kicker CVX witha 5 cubic foot box in my trunk i did have the feeling of the extra fat person at first until i replaced my rear struts and then that went away but these guys are right TUNING IS KEY
