confused about which spark plugs and wires to use?

Hey

New here, just bought a 2005 gtp comp, it has the gen 3 supercharger on the 3800. Right now i just plan on getting the car running as perfect as possible stock than modding it. I'm not going to go crazy with mods, just probably CAI, 180 stat, and drop 1 pulley size. Thats about it really, might change my mind later tho. Anyways i want to do a tune up because its time and i am not sure what plugs to use? If i buy plugs now do i have to change them out to a colder one's once i start modding? or is there a plug i can use that works good stock and handles okay with basic mods?

Also i have read alot of conflicting statements about the wires, Some people say just buy stock because they are the best, But than ill read on another thread that MSD or taylor offer a slight advantage? can anyone clear up which plugs and wires suit what im going for right now?

Thanks

Stock wires, they be cheap, or any lifetime wire set at the auto store.

If you want to drop pullys, your need exhaust mods first, just so you know.

As for plugs, how often do you want to change them.

Ac delco plugs will last atleast 75k.

Most modded guys run AL 606 copper cores at a basic mod level, they need to be changed every 13-15k miles, but at under 2 bucks a plug, its cheap.

ya i was just listing some general mods i was thinking of, thanks for the heads up tho, Ill look more seriously into what needs to be done before dropping pulley sizes when the time is right. So i can just run AL 606 plugs now with the stock set up? And is taylor and MSD wires equal to stock? just curious.

One last thing, The plugs in the back, does anything need to be moved out of the way to change them? ive changed plugs on the 3400 and that was not to bad, this looks worse tho

Nope. But you can remove the front dogbones and wratchet strap the motor forward a few inches to give yourself more room back there.

2005 gtp comp, it has the gen 3 supercharger[\quote] You should have a GenV, Not a GenIII.

CAI, 180 stat, and drop 1 pulley size.
1. Folks here would suggest saving $150 on the CAI box and just going open cone. HP difference is negligible.
2. Don't bother with the 180* stat. It won't do anything for you.
3. You need exhaust mods to touch you supercharger pulley. So don't touch it.

do i have to change them out to a colder one's once i start modding?
You change heat range when you experience knock with smaller supercharger pulleys.

Also i have read alot of conflicting statements about the wires, Some people say just buy stock because they are the best, But than ill read on another thread that MSD or taylor offer a slight advantage?
There is no advantage to more expensive wires until you go over 3-400hp. Just buy store brand lifetime warranty wires.

So i can just run AL 606 plugs now with the stock set up?
AL606XP is equivalent to stock. It's iridium. Copper ones need to be changed every 15-30,000 miles because our engine chews them up.
The plugs in the back, does anything need to be moved out of the way to change them? ive changed plugs on the 3400 and that was not to bad, this looks worse tho
You don't need to move anything to change them. Spark plugs on this engine are not only easier to do than on a 3400 because they aren't hidden behind the exhaust manifolds, but there's more room for your arm.

A 185 wont hurt, do it as maintenance.

Local parts store will have ACdelco wires with a lifetime warranty, change them as often as you like lol. 99% of modded GPs dont need anything other than stock. The only advantages you would see with a quality aftermarket wire set would be less radio interference.

Unless you start to go 3.4'' or lower stick with autolite 606s. Ive been running the same copper plugs for 60k, so i would say they do not need to be changed as often as most say they do.

I'm intrigued, where did you get this 185?

And yes, it'll reduce fuel economy, and steal more heat from the combustion chamber which in turn is lost power.

It's preventative maintenance - all electronics vary in quality. Sounds like you got 6 strong plugs and a nicely-performing engine if you're still getting good mileage and power out of copper plugs at 60,000 miles. But Autolite even said that their copper plugs start knocking in as little as 16,000 miles (though many last longer) in a 3800 because of the exhaust-spark system.

Thanks for all the help everyone, I'm going to run the autolites and just switch them out every year, although they probably don't effect performance I read that prj wires hold up well so I'm leaning towards that. Do I need the DEI protect a boots as well?

If you mod in the future 180 tstat and turning the fans on sooner with a tune will help combat kr. Also build your own intake there are a lot of write ups on how to do it, and much cheaper. Even if performance increase is negligent, the change in how loud the supercharger whine is worth it imho.

I changed plugs and wires today, Super PITA, im thinking it was the first time its ever had new plugs and wires. wires had to be torn from the boot and than pulled out and the plugs were all rusted. I finished everything and started it and it has a rough idle, the exhaust is even shaking. Any ideas?

I assumed the autolite 606's are pre gapped to .60... i never confirmed it tho
