Delayed Shifting..

I have a 1997 GT it seems to not like to shift out of second unless the engine is around 3000 to 3500 RPM. it stays in 3rd or higher as long as im not going slower than 40mph. No slipping problems or anything. Already dropped the pan changed the fluid and added some Lube guard to it. Didn't change much other than now it shifts around 3000 rpm now. Not really too sure what to try next. A mechanic friend mentioned shift solenoids.. Any advice? Thanks.

I guess it is possible, because the transmisson is controlled via vaccum, and maybe if there is a leak somewhere the increased rpms to make it shift may be the result of a leak.

97 was the only year with that transmission.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnttttttttttt not true.

The 4T60E was in cars with the 3.8L Series 1 motor since 1992 and then was hitched up to the Series II motor beginning in 1995 on the NA platform. In 1996 the trans was hitched to a Series II SC motor. Beginning in 1997 the SC motor was connected to a 4T65E while the NA kept the 4T60E during 1997 and was switched in 1998 to the 4T65E. The Grand Prix did not get a 3.8L motor until 1997...aka GP was late to the 3800 party.

Check for fluid in your vacuum line off the moduluator (on front of trans). When was your last tune up? If you have any ignition related or sensor issues, those can effect the way the trans shifts.

Bill I'm confused. Are you saying that some 1998 NA GP's still had a 4T60E?..you sure your right?

In 98 the only available trans in these cars was the 4T65E I tried to say 97 was the last year and they changed in 98

Fivefinger meant that of the Grand Prix's from 97 to 03, the NA 97 GT was the only car that came with the 4T60E. I'm sure he knows the 4T60E was used in many of the earlier platforms. Just thinking out loud.

Checked the vacuum modulator lines they were okay. Got a replacement modulator this morning (it was cheap) and it seemed to help slightly still does it however at a lower RPM (2800ish). Anything else that could be causing this?

yeah the tune up is recent. I have a scanner and there are no DTCs what so ever.. the shiffting is somewhat improved but still seems similar..

Take a look on the scanner for tps (ign on, engine off) and see if it moves smoothly. then take a look at the maf and see if that looks about right while shifting. Maybe even clean the maf and the TB just to be sure.

Scanning will tell you a lot. If the thing should be shifting and it's not then it may be a bad shift solenoid, force motor or accumulator.

You could swap shift solenoids and see if the problem follows to the other gear change. If it were something with the engine I would expect it to be erratic and happening intermittently for all shifts. I could be wrong though.
