Motor oil for 3800?

I run the royal purple oil with lucas synthetic additive...BUT I run synthetic in all my vehicles. I dont base the value of my car on the $ spent for maintenance. maybe this is why I have had DD and work trucks go over 300K on stock tranny and no major repairs. I am not easy on my driving habits either. Thats just my .02 you will have others who will say I am crazy to spend 50 bucks on an oil change for a vehicle with a worthless book value. My reply is, well worth a penny or not I dont want to have to buy another vehicle until I chose to. Buying a replacement vehicle and the inconvenience is worth the small maintenace fees I spend. I'm not knocking Bio's advice, just explaining why I go synthetic.
I guess I'd say how long do you want the car to last and how hard do you drive? Plus how is your budget?

I agree about spending money for maintenance if you want your car to last. But I still will maintain that for a daily driven vehicle in normal conditions, synthetic is not needed. My 3800 will run 250,000 miles plus on regular Valvoline 5W30 from Walmart. I guarantee it. No synthetic needed.

Royal Purple 5w-30 and now an Amsoil filter. I don't put a lot of miles in my car and just change the oil every six months (about 4k miles). So, I want to put oil in that I know will be okay over that length of time. It keeps my engine pretty clean the few times I've opened it.

i say use royal purple oil all the way! that stuff is great, andn use a k&n oil filter. its a really good synthetic, and is definitely the best oil ive used.

I to use Royal Purple. I went to this coz of the fact I was getting crappy gas millage.

between the oil, CAI, premium fuel I'v got my millage from 19m/g to 27m/g.
the oil made a great difference. Now i just need to put Royal Purple in the trany.( if they have something like that)

i use this new penzoil platnium full syenthic it was like 27 bucks "GOOD STUFF" it was on sale also lol at advanced with a penzoil filter

I use Regular Valvoline Oil 10w30 and change my oil every 2500-3000 miles or 4 months... whichever is first. I see no point in running syn, my family has taken several motors well over 100k mark without it. My parents have a 318 SB w/ over 400,000 miles on it, the motor has never been broken apart (heads, intake, oil pan has never been pulled nor need to be). My motor is very clean inside, I think our routie and reputation with motors speaks for itself. I have only a 160,000 miles on my GTP.

Valvoline 10w30 and an AC/Delco PF47 filter for me....

wow i think that 318 would be about near impossible to break down now lol...with rusted bolts and time...u'll break every single one...lol

I run Royal Purple 10-30 and K&N oil filters in all my vehicles ,why because it looks like purple koolaid.JK ,I know the added expense of synthetic oil is probably not necessary but I look at it this way they have increases on the dyno with RP this would mean you should get a little less friction and also less wear.

but I look at it this way they have increases on the dyno with RP this would mean you should get a little less friction and also less wear.

And I noticed a slight increase in fuel economy and time for the engine to warm. It definitely reduces friction.

I got the Castrol Syntec:

I got a deal on it though. It was 24.99 W/ a fram oil filter. Fram is crap I know but, it was at leaste the better end of fram. I think it was called tough guard or something.

Runs nice :)

That's the type of oil I use, I just use the K&N filter. But, yea, for that price, I'd probably throw that filter on to get by.

Mobil 1 synthetic and going to do a blackstone oil test to see how much life was left in the oil once I decide to change it

i know a guy who lives in Ecuador, engine never rebuilt or swapped, owns a Toyota Tacoma (not sure on the year) but has over..... wait for it......

1,000,000 miles!!!! :th_king-normal:

The guy who owns it was the Grandfather of my roommate about 3-4 years ago. He bought an oil system from this family in California who made them. I don't remember what the system was made of, but you NEVER had to change the oil!!! Just had to add more when needed.

One thing I do remember about the pictures I saw of the system was it was based around a.............. toilet paper roll......... pretty inovative

Toyota actually offered to buy the truck from him (apparently a hefty sum) but he refused to sell it. He loves it! Also I know the family and they are incredibly wealthy. My roommates Uncle took over the country through a Militia. Not sure if he's still the leader of Ecuador, but he was a heart surgeon before.

Long story on the California family. They were going to patent the idea but the oil companies put them out of business real quick. :th_lipssealed2:
