Hey, I'm new to the forum. I have a 2000 GP GTP, owned it since 2002. My car is getting to that age where repairs and part replacements are inevitable and I am tired of forking out big bucks for labour. Just this past week I had my oil changed at a Lube shop and was informed that my fuel filter was rusted and recommended replacing for the whopping cost of $89.99 +GST and whatever shop supply fee's they will tack on when the part itself is only $13.99. I have time and a little know how and thought joining a forum like this could help myself and others with some problems common to the GP.

second thing....you will learn a lot from here, i know i did lol...doing things yourself is a great way to save money..just at the cost of time

This is a GREAT place, I just recently found it as well. I have a hard time paying people to do things for me, so a $100 fuel filter makes me throw up a lil in my mouth :P

Online forums can be a great way to build your knowledge and comfort level when it comes to do it yourself repairs.
 
Welcome.. Put up a post in the mechanical section and we'll tell you how to get that filter off w/o busting a rusty line.
 


Lube shops do that; if the filter has surface rust on it, they think it is old and recommend changing it. I changed mine so they don't ask anymore. :)

Another plus to doing your own repairs is that you know the job is done right. You can pay as much attention to detail as you want, where as most shop mechanics are trying to get the repair done as quick as possible so they can move on to the next job because they get paid a percentage of the repair bills. Not saying they all do a bad job, but those little details to get everything just like factory again are often sacrificed for speed.
 
They go by retail cost on the part and time by the book. $90 for a fuel filter job seems fair.

Doing things yourself is generally the best route.
