Which one HD-DVD or Blu-ray?



Me and a buddy did some investigating, looks like the dvd war is about to begin and it's all about jumping on the right bandwagon. Right now it seems blue ray is winning with tons of support and backers, and hd dvd might fall through. But then I heard that Hd-dvd might be getting backed by walmart and a few other powerhouses to compete with blue-ray. After all this, you don't want to buy something that's going to fall through in a few years.

So we bought a PS3 with blue ray for $400, we watched in 1080p and it was amazing, better than movie theaters! By getting a PS3, if blue ray ever falls through, we still have a great gaming system, plus you can browse the net on the ps3. Why buy a $300 player that only does one thing?

If you go hd dvd, I personally think it may be hard to find to find hd-dvd's later on.
 
I have to agree with FoSHO99. Why pay 300+ for a blueray player, when for 400 you can get a really nice blueray player and gaming system. Also Disney is onboard with blueray, they are starting to make available all of their old movies on BR DVD. In my opinion, HD DVD is going to be the next casualty in the war. Wal-Mart is supporting both formats currently and equally, the price of the disks are about the same, however I do see HD DVD fighting back by offering their players about 50 bucks cheaper. I dont think that will work for long.

I don't have time to play games, I will get all wrapped up in them. I am happy when i have time to sleep. I try to sit down and watch a movie with the wife once or twice a week.
 
I agree with the PS3. But if you really don't want that, then I would recommend a blue-ray player with video upconversion. Then you can watch regular DVDs in HD. But then the PS3 can do that too I think....I don't have it with me right now but I believe my last crutchfield catalog had bluray/hddvd combos for like $400...so they are getting cheaper.
 


I have been pondering on this myself and have thought about getting a PS3. I have seen both HD-DVD and Blu Ray movies and 1080P is 1080P My tv only supports 1080i so it doesnt really matter to me as they are both more than enough. I dont keep up much on this stuff other than going to consumer reports online now and then to compare things and then check local listings for sales here and there. I know that the PS3 has lower pricing now and also I think the harddrives are different sizes than what came out on the initial release. Does anyone know the differences of the PS3s? I have heard the cheaper one does not do everything the $100 more expensive model can do, but again I dont know and this is why I am asking. I feel Blu-ray will have more movies and I see that more than HD-DVD stuff around here but its probably a coin toss overall.
 
I have a PS3 as it is. But If I had to choose it would def. be Blu-Ray. The discs themselves hold way more information than the HDDVD's do. In the long run I see HDDVD being the new Beta.

I have a PS3 and it's a GREAT Blu-Ray player. The difference between the 40gb and 80gb pretty minimal, especially if you're using it mostly as a Blu-Ray player. The 40gb does not include any backwards compatability for Playstation 2 games, but can still play PS1 games. The 80gb model has backbards compatibility through software emulation, and is said to be about 80% compatible with PS2 games. That model includes a copy of Motorstorm, while the 40gb model I believe comes with a Blu-Ray copy of Spider-Man 3.

As a side note, I saw today at Best Buy that Sony dropped the price of one model of their Blu-Ray players to $299 if you just want to play movies.:)
 
There's no way I'm buying either one until it's near settled. I'm not gonna end up w/a laserdisc player. :P

Having said that, I kinda hope Sony actually wins a format war for once. They lost VHS/Beta (at least in the consumer segment), they lost minidisc, they lost memory stick, they lost (pretty much) the PSP format DVD things…Maybe this one will work. Last I heard, many of the large DVD distributors were making extra shelf space for Blu-Ray discs.
 
What the heck is wrong with laserdisc?

For that matter, whats wrong with minidisc? I have a portable minidisc recorder and a stand alone shelf unit. Both work great still and I have used them extensively, well the portable mini-disc anyway. Its what I have used to record the sounds of thunderstorms for a number of years. Though admittedly there is no real easy way to transfer that to a PC, but I manage.
 
if i had to choose it would be blue ray!! From what little knowledge i have it is the only format that is supported by computers as far as i know. True there are some players out there but i've only found blue ray burners

Oh, nothing is necessarily wrong w/them, but the formats didn't gain popularity nearly as well as they had hoped, especially with the laserdisc.
 


Until someone cracks the intricate copy protection on either of them.... I will be sticking with DVD's. :p
 
I have a Toshiba HD-DVD player......Transformers was really good on that. Only reason I bought it was because I got in on that Walmart $100 special. Otherwise, I would have waited.
