Never buy a nice bike for your first bike. Pick up a cheap bike, either a 250 or a 500 Ninja and ride it till you get used to everything, because you WILL lay it down. You will either lose your balance waiting for a light to change, or may get into some loose gravel and end up in a low side slide because you don't properly compensate.
Once you have ridden for a season or two, then go look for nicer bikes.

if you want good advice i suggest you find a good motorcycling forum with experienced riders on it. you will get more good advice than not. if you want my advice i will give you a little credentials of mine. i have been riding since i was 8 (im 33 now) on the street since i was 16, i built my 1st motorcycle on my own. i have racing licenses from 2 organizations, ccs and mcra, i am an MSF rider coach, and have completed multiple track days and race schools, i am an assistant track day coach for mcra, and ed bargy's race school. i have approx 5000 miles on the track and over 300k on the street. i spent 2 yrs at MMI.
get good gear. people swear by 600 dollar helmets but the truth is that the 175 dollar kbc has the same standards or build as the 600 dollar arai. a good set of gauntlet style (long and past the wrist), leather, with some sort of hard knuckle glove is best. if your on a budget get a 2piece set of leathers. something you can use all week and then use on the track if you do a track day (which i highly recommend). a good set of riding boots. there are a ton of options here and a ton of price options too. make sure everything except the boots fit fairly snug. the leather will stretch to fit and the pads inside the helmet will form to your face. a well fitting helmet will not jiggle when you shake your head and will smoosh your cheeks a little. something i learned is that one good ride in the rain and then ride until they dry and your leathers will fit awesome much faster.
and last but not least this is for everyone because i know its coming. people seem to think that because you have nothing around you that your going to die quicker. this is not so. it has been proven that up to 45 mph yes on a motorcycle you have a much higher percentage of dying but once you start going faster than 45 your chance of dying in a car multiplies much faster than on a bike. at 100 mph you have a 98% chance of dying in a car with a 72% chance on a bike at 100. it is simple. your body might not do anything but tumble when you crash at 100 mph (which i personally have done) but if you crash at 100 in a car the car crushes around you and your body impacts steel. every year 1 out of every 6 car drivers dies in an accident versus 1 out of every 12 motorcyclists. and that is per capita not simply because there are more cars than bikes.

size and weight mean nothing. i know i could take a 250 and run circles around alot of guys in the twisties. is it fast? no. is it fun as hell? yes.
i say get the 250. ride it for 6 months or so. take as many MSF and track days as you can. get good gear. then think about an older r6. trust me not very many people out there short of a professional roadracer will see the full potential of even a 2000 model r6.

I have a 2007 Ninja 250. No it's not that fast in the straights, but it out matches anything out there for maneuverability. And yes I've been riding for 12 years, and have owned 5 bikes, even a 1000cc, and still like my 250 best.

my first bike was a 78 cb400 and it was a great bike to learn on. I laid it down once and it didn't even phase it. Then i got a 88 cbr 600 it was pretty fast but the ride wasn't very comfortable and now i have my 79 cx 500 it's very comfortable to ride and it's pretty wide which makes riding other bikes like riding a moped lol

my cb400f was my 1st bike. i found it behind my uncles shop in daytona when i was 14 and worked my ass of to afford the parts to rebuild it. and i had an 88 hurricane as well. i loved it. didnt handle as well as some of the other bikes ive had but it was decent. ive always liked the way the engine looked in the cx.
