KR is winning!!!

Yup that's right KR is kicking my a$$.:th_angry-censored: I have a scan from my HPT that I could send someone who is strong in the tuning subject. I'm looking for some help on this, it seems that every time I touch the throttle I get KR, if the convertor locks and there is the slightest incline....I get KR. Of course a steep hill there is KR as well. I even get KR in 2nd gear!! :th_shakinghead1:

Like I said looking for thoughts on what I'm either forgeting or need to change. Send me a PM and email, Ill send you my scan.

Thanks in advance!!

I've been seeing the same thing (see my thread "PE nuts" not far down from this one). I'm convinced it's my plugs are bad after 68k miles (factory iridium plugs). It only does it once the engine has time to heat up.

Tomorrow I'm doing plugs, wires, O2 sensor, and motor mounts. Hopefully it'll straighten up. :th_shakinghead2:

Host your scan here since I'm curious to see it. Just post up the link:

Get some headers or at least a powerlog with a ported rear manifold. You gotta let that 3.4 pulley breath a little bit better.

Im an hpt user here but my laptop just broke. post your entire mod list. everything. And when exactly are you getting the kr? PT WOT or both? Ill have to install HPT on my home computer also so I can look t it for you. Also what have you done to your .bin file as far as tuning?

Well, here is an update. I found a problem with my engine (intake leak; cracked EGR tube).
My ltft were not making any sense, so i started looking for why. Used some TB cleaner and found that my maxed out (lean) ltft's changed when i sprayed at the EGR tube. No where else but there. So I took it off and sure enough a crack in the place where it is supposed to seal. Put the new one on and as expected my pegged (lean) ltft's where now almost pegged (rich).
So I do still have KR but not as bad and the car runs very much stronger. Tell me about getting KR if your ltft's are to rich.

My LTFTs float from -5 to -10. I think I too have a vacuum leak and am waiting on the solution. I'll let you know.

Hey do a test for me. You say you have some cruise kr? Disable the EGR by setting the minum temp to 256. I'd be willing to bet that would take care of a lot of people's problem with cruise kr. At least it has proved bennefitial on HPT by other members. Just a suggestion to do after you get everything squared away.

Interesting. Care explaining why that would help? Would it affect MPG?

take the EGR completely off. it opens up so much room too. :)

oh, by the way, a vacuum leak is going to show very high positive numbers. everytime i had one my ltfts were pegged at 16.4.

I confirmed I have a vacuum leak with carb cleaner, and an o-ring is completely missing. ;)

o-ring???

O-ring on the IAC valve was missing. Still didn't solve my knock, but it idles better.

Now I'm looking more into this EGR business. My symptoms seem to be more from a lack of EGR flow than the EGR causing the issue. Everywhere I look for diagnosing knock a clogged or non-functioning EGR valve is at the top of the list. It aids in cooling combustion chamber temperatures which fights knock and lowers emissions.

I don't see how people get away with removing it. :th_wtf:

whaaaaat? i dont want the egr putting crap in my intake, so i took it out. they dont do visual tests here so i dont have to do a thing to pass, just a smog.

i get a little less mileage, but i dont care. im done worrying about affording gas. its going to be there and im going to need it. sooner or later ill get my car tuned though, wideband and happy knob going in soon. i just need to get a hold of a local to give me a decent tune that i can just use my afc/happy knob for driving daily.

Actually the EGR is only activated during cruising situations and is never used at WOT, so the EGR wouldn't have any effect on knock. Now if the EGR was stuck open, that'd be a whole different story.

Question I have is....Without taking the EGR Valve off and inspecting it, how can you tell if it is working properly?

If you bothered to read my issues, I do have knock at cruise. Only when the engine is reaching its operating temps, and only when cruising under load (up a hill or something). I've found dozens of sources that point straight to the EGR valve not supplying any exhaust gas when expected. The PCM advances timing which is okay (assuming exhaust gas was indeed recirculated, since the combustion chamber temps drop due to the inert gas thinning the mix), but if there's not EGR function due to clogged tubes or a malfunctioning EGR, the combustion chamber temps are rising and the advanced spark definitely doesn't help resulting in knock like I'm seeing.

Hope I explained it well enough.

I disabled it using the method TDCRacing suggested. Initial results are promising. PTKR has dropped substantially. Either the EGR is faulty or dirty or the PCM just expects too much of it. My PTKR is near zero now, with occasional blips (which I'm told is unavoidable). I'll post before and after scans later.

Next, I'll be seeing if I can get into PE mode without the KR suddenly spiking.

More update. PE is still causing problems... :th_angry2:

As far as the EGR deal, it works... kinda. The flash KR is gone so you don't have to be touchy with the throttle to avoid the PT KR. But, if you hold it for more than a few seconds (say 20-25% TPS with the TCC locked) then it starts to come back as the combustion chamber temps rise with the sustained load. That's what the EGR is designed to fight.

I think mine is clogged. Tomorrow I'm going to hunt down a EGR gasket, a pipe cleaner, and some TB cleaner (cleaning the TB too) and give it a go. Carb cleaner will be used to clean the EGR pipes, but I'm taking off the TB so I want some TB cleaner too.

I still don't understand why as soon as I hit PE the KR jumps by 3-4* from what it was just below PE (as I roll into the throttle). Anyone ever seen this before?

And my WOT KR is still present but goes away the richer the car gets. I wasn't logging (was playing with my friend on the way back from Buffalo Wild Wings) and noticed as the car was about to shift out of 2nd at WOT the KR had finally fully recovered and wasn't coming back and after the shift still wasn't there. I'm sure the RPM_vs_Time table had lowered the AFR to a point that it was enough.

Gotta do some more scanning as I straighten things out.
