OP: Octane rating is simply resistance to autoignition (detonation). If you can bring down the cylinder temps a little you can run 87 with no problems. And 87 would be fine in an otherwise stock car if you weren't beating on it all the time.

Where the hell do you get 85 octane? The lowest I've ever seen is 87.

Any high altitude location will have lower octane gas - I live in Denver.

My choices at ANY gas station in Colorado is between 85 to 89 I believe (I run the latter in my GTO). You can't get higher octane ratings as it's pointless at altitude.

With less air density and less O2 density, you need less resistance to preignition (what higher octane provides).
