Hi pontiac family. I put my car in the shop 4 a whine noise near the power steering pump some where in that area. When i accelerate it almost sounds like i have a turbo, our a super charge. The sound is not as loud when my car is idling but its there. So my mechanic, told me that it was my harmonic balancer, and that he suggested my power steering pump, as well as my serpentine belt need to be changed. Well after doing all of the 3 things, the sound is still there!!!!! He told me that he had add in a adjective in the power steering fluid because he did not no if it was that our not!!!!!

Any suggestions our insight please??????????????:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

But the noise is coming somewhere near the pulleys, near the power steering pump!!! Im lost n i think my mechanic is 2!!!!!

Trust me on this right now. My GXP did the same thing. IT's the idler pulley directly after the power steering pump. Put a stealthascope thing on it and you can hear it loud and clear. Replace the pulley and then its silent.

I actually replaced my pump before I figured out it was just the pulley!

i think i might have the same problem, but it only happens when i'm in drive. did this only happen in drive when you had this problem?? Only when i give the car gas it whines

First off...just check the fluid...see if there is even any in there. Next I'd try the water pump...they tend to squeal, or the PCV Valve...had those issues before. Or, if it is a pulley of sorts...spray some WD40 on all the pulleys and see if the noise goes away...do it 1 by 1...that way if it stops you've tracked the noise down.

After reading your post, i went outside checked the fluids they are all good. then i turned the car on and listened for the noise i couldnt pin point the problem so i got a can of silcone lubrication spray and started with the idler pulley then power steering pulley with the car on, within a few minutes the sound was gone! this helped me out alot thanks for your help!

Is lubricating the pulleys a permanent thing? Or will the noise soon return?

Most of the time it'll fade again...it is just a bandaid. Granted...I WD40'd the crap out of all the pulleys on my old Buick and drove it for 2 years and they only sqeaked again when they were cold out.

I'd isolate the pulley and replace it for sure when the funds are available...and with metal ones...since GM likes to put plastic ones on there for some odd ass reason.

I appreciate all the sapport guys, and YES!!! It was the power steering PULLEY!!! NOW MY ENGINE IN NICE AND QUIET!!!!!!!!!
