what shop (other than the dealership) would anyone recommend as far as restoring the undercarriage of a grand prix? To give you an idea of what I am on, I live in the midwest (salt:th_crossbones1:) and although the body looks decent on the outside, the underneath is old metal and rust along the edges (under the doors) due to the previous owner that dont understand the concept of taking care of the car. I figured before I start pouring money into mods and engine swaps and other nice things that I would start with the frame structure. Any ideas? I don't want to get rid of it because of sentimental value and so far its been holding up for the 146xxx miles on it.
 


To be honest, find a good rust free car to start with. Rust is expensive to fix, thats if you even find a shop willing to do it. Have you ever fixed rust before? Not fun!
Sentiment has way less value than piece of mind knowing you have a solid car. I have seen rusty cars almost break in half because of structure damage due to unseen rust, just not worth it.

I didn't say repair it myself, i was saying if there was a shop that does that....
and the photobucket thing :th_scratchhead:, too complex for me, I prefer the drag and drop method...

a shop would charge you... way too much for the pay off to be worth it.

Suggestion Sell the 97 GT.

Browse some craigslist in some southern states. find a 98+ GTP (Rust Free) buy it and drive up and enjoy a relaiable car with no rust.
 


I'm betting you just have a bunch of surface rust. clean under there real good and wire brush it all off or somthing maybe scrub on it with some dot-15 or what ever its called and throw some rust prevention paint on there...and call it a day if that Iv'e never seen a modern car structure rust trough but who knows we need pics
 
i have, and yea pics and we could give wayy better advice. someones idea of bad rust might not be bad at all to someone else.

and its POR-15 (paint over rust), people abuse this stuff alot, its meant for undercarriage rust only, and it has to go on rusty metal thats what it bonds to

^^^Exactly! some rust is very easy to fix which is why in my I was hoping to get a pic of the damage and walk the OP through fixing it.

and its POR-15 (paint over rust), people abuse this stuff alot, its meant for undercarriage rust only, and it has to go on rusty metal thats what it bonds to

POR-15 is great stuff and you're right it's commonly abused but is fantastic when used correctly. I used that stuff to coat my entire frame and underside of my '77 that I restored.

I gotta be honest....this is a pretty idiotic post as the two things have absolutely nothing to do with the other. Some people are just not familiar with a lot of technology or whatever. I've met and been around some people that were awesome at metal work, body work and building cars but don't even have email. Just cuz you can scoot around on the internet doesn't make you someone special....
 
Guys dont put the guy down. So what if he loves his car? Who gives a rats butt that its a GT? He loves the car, (Or she?) so dont give the guy crap just because he loves this car enough to want to restore it. Some people re-collect old toys they used to have and restore them. If you dont have anything nice to say then dont say anything.

from what im told POR was invented to coat battery trays, its acid resistant as well.

my brother rebuilt a 85 gmc truck and he hit everything on the bottom of the truck with POR, (while it was off the frame), and the frame, its still there and looks good.

and it ain't cheap!
