It's true. My wife and I took the Chevy Volt for a test drive. A local dealer has a Volt that they are demoing. They're not aloud to sell it for 6 months, so there was no pressure into if we were interested in buying it or not. It's an interesting car, and the best way to describe it is it's like driving a giant iPod. But anyways, here's the test video:

its a gas money saver. its not suppose to be fast. still, pretty chill. i will never like the LCD guages.

It's got buttons all over the center dash, and a touch screen that switches to a rear view camera when you put it in reverse.

As far as the speed, I actually think it's not that bad (although not fast either). My first car was slower then this (1995 Chevy Monte Carlo LS). I think that considering that this car is 3700lbs and the test was done in full electric mode, it did alright.
 


The gas would go bad in the tank if I bought one of these, in fact alot of people who own this car might have an issue with the gas going bad.

A typical commute to work is 20-25 miles each way. So it can do 100 miles before using fuel. I would charge it everyday so I would never really hit the fuel and most people are going to be doing the same thing. I hope GM is ready for that kind of a problem.
 
LOL, just about as fast as the Cobalt was...and Dave if you don't start the gasoline engine it will periodically do so on its own so your gas, fluids, and every other part doesn't go bad.
 
I guess it's ok, given that's an electric car. The other good thing I guess, is that I suppose that the performance would not be affected by the altitude.
 


what about the price of the Volt? its $40,000,
you can get a chevy aveo for $12,000, thats $28,000 difference, that sure is a lot of gas
if your buying the Volt just because you want to save money buying fuel you lost me

I thought he said he was getting ~40 miles on a charge. That might just barely cover your commute, but I refuse to believe that a majority of customers will plug the thing in after every single little errand after the first two months of ownership.

The styling is interesting... it's got plenty of hipster and nerd appeal between the (newer) Honda Civic-ness and iPod-liness... and it's two-tone for... well... black folk. And it's got Dad covered since it doesn't make you look like you should be wearing a dress to drive it like the Prius does. It looks to be of reasonable size for city driving and throw in a tax credit for the sensible consumer, and I think they've got a lot of good stuff going for them.

So... how long before there's a recall because a 400lb battery set itself on fire underneath some children?
Also, will this still make use of normal automotive batteries for accessories/electronics and whatnot? Or will there be some alternator charge for that big mamajama?

Additional: Completely turned off by the WebEx orb on the dash. I see that icon too much, don't want it in my car.

#1 thing: do not run fuel with ethanol in it.

Not yet anyways. There will be a Flex Fuel option around 2013. Besides, if there is about 10-15% ethanol in the gasoline, it won't do any harm to the engine. About the only problem with it is that you'll lose about 1-2 mpg.
 
And like I stated before...it will periodically start itself so things like ethanol gasoline wouldn't go bad.

More than that, you will still have to put fuel into the Volt, it just uses less so it goes further.

The batteries for the volts are not even close to normal auto batteries. They are aluminum encased long cyl looking objects that would probably turn into a claymore mine should a problem arise. I got the info for the batteries and how to warranty them last fall when they started producing the cars. The pictures make these things look massive. I think a couple good AC Delco's runnin in series would do the trick but... ya :p
