fuel pump flow

99prixgt

club of used to own a gp
the car has the following

xp cam
42# injectors
full size intercooler
LQ4

and stock 150k fuel pump, no re-wire

im trying to figure out whats going on, i got my car on the road today, idled great, bled the coolant, then went driving around. When i was rolling into the throttle in 2nd gear i noticed my wideband went straight to 17 in the red, i stayed on it for a couple of seconds, it was still pegged. Even normal driving if i hit a hill or something and the car is at a low rpm in 2nd my wideband pegs lean. I stopped the car, turned it off, added some fuel with my tuner, go to start it and nothing, cranks, idles for a sec then dies. I put fuel back to the way it was and the same thing happend, then i hear the pump either, not whinning or whinning funny, not sounding the way it should. I swapped the fuel pump relay from my other car, started it, ran rough, still leaning out in areas where its not supposed to, and actually feeling it bog. I managed to make it home.

im guessing i need a high flow fuel pump and re-wire? I was eying up prj's kit. what are u guys using for fuel with similar setups?

Running a zzp rewire and a stock pump now. New setup I'm installing is a racetronix pump with a hybrid 98/01 tank, prj rewire, and kenne bell boost a pump in case.

The problem with the stock wiring is it sucks. Problem with the stock pump is probably the wirings fault, but it sucks too, most go out every 100k. The zzp rewire solves some of your power and ground issue, easy and simple to install but I just went with a bigger rewire kit for some more headroom and options on my setup.

If you're keeping the car and might be upgrading in the future, a racetronix pump and prj rewire is that peace of mind at a price. If your looking for a cheap fix, then a simple rewire or zzp rewire and then another stock pump either from the junkyard or new. Make sure to note the differences between venturi pumps (97-00?) and non-venturi pumps like the 01+ have. Non venturi are in plastic tanks and the fuel canister will have a different top on it as well.

Also make sure your fuel filter isn't causing it. Cheaper than a fuel pump.

thanks for the quick replies

i do plan on keeping the car for a long time and keep going bigger and bigger with my build. Already eying up is3 cam maybe next year. If i order the racetronix rewire and pump it looks like i have to run a fuel pump canister with a ventri port? is that right? only asking cuz my car is a gt

I went Gtp fuel pump(from morad) and racetronixs rewire. The GTP pump does slightly outflow the GT unit. Or so I hear

You can get fuel pump repair kits on ebay. Payed $32.99 for an ac delco replacement pump. I installed mine a while ago and have had great results.

since my car is a gt, i don't have a ventri port. Would a 99 gtp canister with a ventri port fit? so then i can run a racetronix pump and prj re-wire?

the other option would be a walbro but, it seems 01-up cars only like them, difference in sending units and plastic tanks

Just email and ask Paul for sure. He'll get you setup or let you know what you need. You may be able to turn the existing canister into a venturi setup and run his pump, but he will be able to tell you what canister/parts combo is the best, because he knows the differences between years and all the little stuff.
