Rpm problems?

When I am driving normally at about 45mph, the rmp's are maybe 1500 -2500. I come to a incline and I give the car a little gas to climb the hill when the Rpm's go way down to maybe 800? I then have to push the pedal more then 1/2 way down for it to downshift. Is this normal? Ive never had a car that did this, but dealer said its normal. They also said its normal for power stearing fluid to go down and needed more added every 5-10k and add a quart of engine oil every 3k . I dont have an extreme knoledge of cars but I am not that dumb.

Im not sure if this has anything to do with the rpm question but when I get on to a on ramp the i to a point were i dont give it anymore gas and the rpm's are going up slowly along with the speed. It gets to about 3000-3500 and the car takes off like I switched on a supercharger or something while holding the trottle in the same place the whole time.

Any Ideas?

Sounds like you are fighting to stay in overdrive. Around 45 is where they want to shift into OD under normal acceleration, so if you get on a hill and try to give it gas yes it will lug the motor down a bit until it downshifts out of OD.

Unless I know I am going to be doing 50+, I usually leave the trans in 3 to keep it from shifting to OD. Keeps the motor from lugging and the trans from constantly shuffling between OD and D. This will cause the 4th clutch shaft splines to wear quicker, then you will loose OD altogether.

Power steering leak is most likely the culprit.

Actually, a quart of engine oil every 1K miles is accecptable according to GM, so if you are only adding 1 quart per 3K miles you're doing good :th_thumbsup-wink:

What year GP do you have. i know there is a bulletin out for the high pressure power steering line rubbing on the trans dipstick that causes a leak (i replaced an entire steering rack before finding said leaking line)

bulletin only applies to 7+ gp's

Its a 08.
With the power stearing, I do recall seeing some fluid in the snow under my car. I couldn't figure out what it was, I know what oil, coolant and brake fluid looks like so I knew it wasn't that.

About the tranny... understand what you are saying about the OD.. but this really seem different. I guess ill just have to see if itgets worse.

Thanks everyone

For the power steering. factory p/s fluid is clear. otherwise it would be red. if it is leaking from that line it would be coming from roughly just behind your tires.

another way to check is pop your resevoir cap off. if there is alot of air in there (it will pop) you have a leak.

**edit** if it's as bad as mine was. you will lose all of your fluid pretty quick. and it sprayed all over my downpipe as well so you should smell it burning.
