It's all apples to oranges really. 500 dollars here, 2000 dollars there, Everybody knows that your car is what you put into it. Opinions are fine, nobody can fault you for an opinion. You dislike small displacement motors, fine. It's when a person carries their opinion over to ignorance that you start to run into problems. The no replacement for displacement argument is ignorant. The replacement is F/I, car companies, and car enthusiast alike have been replacing displacement for years.

Is it better? Well that's a loaded question, but for allot people, yes, it is better. Especially in these times. All I'm saying is, I hate to see people bash a honda because they feel that the displacement of it's motor makes it an inferior modding platform. Look into how much a b16, or an h22 swap costs. You might be surprised at how easy/cheap it is to mod one of these little hatches. It doesn't take tons of horsepower or torque to get a 1300 pound car down the track at some very respectable times.


EDIT: And if you're a GTP owner, and you're using the no replacement for displacement argument.....You need to read your owners manual. Turns out, you've been replacing displacement this whole time, who'd a guessed.

i have had a couple 4 banger cars a 1990 civic si hatch that was swaped as well as 2 other civics 2 e30 bmws and an old beater toyota corolaa rwd and 2 j bodys, it is true that all car company are using 4 bangers now like the buick regal and hyundai sonata both 4 banger turbo cars its all personal preference
 
and the cruze. they aren't even performance motors anymore, they just use the turbo for free power. it's about time somebody caught on. R.I.P. LNF

fwiw, even when my truck is running, it's pretty much a turd. just sounds amazing.

and as for the $25k cobalt over the $35k mustang.

I am gonna say that your 10k in mods better go pretty far considering the 2011 mustang lays high 12's and the cobalt lays down mid to low 14's. and even if you were able to make the times I would still take the mustang with its 5 YEAR 60,000 mi warranty and factory emissions equipment over your heavily modded warranty void cobalt!
 


false. that's why the blown 3.8 in the gtps > 5.0 in older mustangs. it's why turbo civics lay down more horsepower than 5.7L chevys. you take away displacement, you can boost a motor and make the same power.

also false, TC balt runs 13's. zzp has it in the 11's on a stock turbo. you could easily run faster than the 12.7 the mustang does with 10k in your pocket

Displacement is technically infinitely endless so boost on a large engine is just replacement for even more displacement it could have.

Also comparing an out of production car to a new car is kind of silly.
Because if you go back a year to the 2010 Mustang, last year for the Cobalt, it was still a lot slower, it still had the 4.6L and put out only 315hp.
 
^ agree. but yeah my buddy can easily get in the 10s with a few more little things and raised boost.
thats about his potential. and damn, id be happy in the tens LOL.

Replacement doesn't mean "better". You're comparing a boosted large displacement motor with a boosted small displacement motor. Well sh*t, I guess you got a point there (sarcasm). And you come in here talking about reading comprehension? F/I is a replacement, substitute, used in lieu of displacement. The basis of the argument is that a smaller motor can make up for it's lack of size, by utilizing F/I. Allowing it to close the gap in hp/trq numbers with a larger displacement N/A motor. Nobody here is trying to say a boosted 4 cylinder has more potential then a boosted v8.

If you're going to run up on everybody pounding your chest and insulting our reading comprehension, at least present a valid argument.
 
Ok I know it wasn't a great comparison (and a bit of a biased one), but the point I was trying to make is that up until a certain point, a 4 cyl car is gonna be faster dollar for dollar. Would I still rather have a larger engine? Sure. Why not? But it's much cheaper to build a 4 cylinder. You just can't rule them out as a respectable motor just because they're smaller. Anyways, I'm done arguing this point, it's a stupid debate that no one can leave alone, and is pointless to argue.
 
my feeling is if it's a build thats done correct, i like it. I may not agree with all the choices made, but damn that thing is fast. Gotta appreciate that. Nice work

Well, at least I tried.

I'm having trouble understanding why the v8 guy is one of the few standing up for the small engine/FI setup. Then again in the world of 5.7's and 6.0's, I'm the little guy with my lil 4.6. My replacement has worked pretty well though, all things considered.

I know a guy getting his LS 1.8 built out here by a big Honda shop and its costing him $1100 for the bottom end and $1900 for the top to get him to a whopping 200hp. Then $5500 to get it turbo'd by them. So no not $82.

Anyone can make a tin can fast, so what. That's all these built hatches are.

And yes I know a guy who had an over 800whp Honda, it ran a best of low 10's, the owner ran a best of low 13's in it.

To me I don't see how you can argue that a 4 banger can be just as fast as a V8. When's the last time you saw a 4 run a 3 second quarter? I'm pretty sure there are none.

If a honda had 800 WHEEL HP...and was only running 10's...then both of the driver's failed...there are PLENTY of Handa's out there with a significant amount of HP less than 800 running 8's and 9's...easily.
