Mounting Amplifiers to Trunk Lid

Hey everyone, I want to run this idea and get everyones opinion on it!

So here goes. My larger amplifiers I used to have were stolen and were replaced with smaller amps that don't look right where the larger ams used to be mounted.

Instead I want to mount both of my amplifiers to the trunk lid, one on either side of the lid with a centrally mounted engraved piece of acrylic that will hopefully look like this.

Now I am sure your asking how I would mount such heavy items to the trunk lid. I have put some though into this. I am thinking about 3/8 or half inch plywood, something that will flex a little bit keep it tensile strength even when bent. I would bolt the plywood to the trunk lid which would give me a hard flat surface to mount both my amplifiers and imbed my plexiglass in the middle of the trunk. I would cover the whole thing with the charcoal carpet to match the trunk and hid all of the wiring underneath the plywood, in the frame of the trunk.

I know it seems optimistic but the more I think about it, the more I think I can pull if off, but If I cant make it look good, than I wont do it. I want everyones ideas on functionality, construction and appearance.

Your gas struts wont be able to hold your lid up if you mount them there.

Up to you really.

You say your last ones got stolen so I dont see why would want to be advertising them every time you pop the trunk.

Exactly right! Nobody hears it but me...so why do I need to show them?

I will say that there's a void in the trunk lid that wouldn't be a bad spot to hide them. However, I'd hate to deal with the wires and setup of the amp in there. You also have to deal with the deck lid weight becoming very cumbersome for the lifting mechanism. You'll need a hefty upgrade on those gas shocks.
 
Well the first time they were stolen they had no idea they they were in there, I was in a parking lot. Not only that but if i open the trunk, the subwoofers are going to be painfuly obvious, so might as well make it look good Second, I was worried about the gas shocks but did a few tests with some free weights and there isn't an issue at all with the weight. Even closing it wasn't too bad. Ive put a lot of thought into this just wanted to see if anyOne had some good ideas on how to make this possible.
 
2003 SSEi did this on his 93 Bonneville. Had to max out the torque bar to hold the lid up and when it would be shut..you could loose anything that was laying in the path. It makes a lid very heavy overall.

I mounted the amp up under the rear deck like 800 did. Works great, looks great when you bend over and see it, out of the way, less wiring and it's fixed. There's no potential for it to be coming loose when the lid is constantly closed.
 
I suppose its somewhat reassuring that someone has done this before. I feeling pretty confidant in that I want to do, the most difficult part is going to be bolting the plywood to the trunk lid frame. 6 bolts with lock washers. This will hopefully contour the the plywood somewhat to the trunk lid itself. Ill mount the amplifiers directly to the plywood itself and run the wiring underneath. My amps arnt massive and I would would mount them low on the trunk lid to keep the center of weight down.
 


I think I decided how I am going to make this happen. I am going to line the trunk lid with fiberglass and mount it to the deck lid. I will bondo two flat areas so I can mount my amplifiers to them and run all of the wiring. I will build an MDF rectangle around each amp and then make a second layer over the MDF so the ams are flush with that layer and all the wiring will be sandwiched between the two layers. Then sand and finish with carpet.
 
I have done flush mount monitors in a decklid.I would sugest monting amps to mdf with nut and bolt before mounting to decklid.also take into consideration that trunks do sometimes leak especially if you have a spoiler recheck all seals.water and electronics don't mix.

Good point on the leak, ill have to silicone the hell outta it before hand.
