gf wants a gtp, i want technical infozz on trans problem!

so as the title says my girlfriend is looking for a GTP. she found one that is very cheap, the guy told her that there are a couple issues one regarding the transmission. so i was talking to him today about it. in his words..

" What i think it is. These cars come with a defective seal on the transmission. When you flush the trans after so many miles of it not being it ruins the seal. Which causes it to shift into neutral when you come to a stop, then back into first when you get on the gas." guy says it only happens every so often and only when warm

it sounds convincing to me, but i know NOTHING of transmissions. so my questions are..

is this a real problem?

if so, what seal is it exactly and what kind of labor would be involved in changing it out?

TIA guys

Doesn't sound right to me [read: B.S.]. I have never heard of that before. You can call the guy on it easy, though. Replacing the pan gasket is cheap; just ask him to do that. If it fixes the problem, I'd be extremely surprised. Heck, even cheaper would be a free scan at an autoparts store. A shift as bad as he's relating would definitely throw a code.

My honest opinion is that the transmission needs a rebuild.

Scott...sounds like one of the valves in the valve body is either sloppy in it's bore or hanging up a bit. Take a look around Dave's site for the symptom.

If that's what Dave or the symptoms suggest, pick up a redone VB/Channel plate off Dave along with a hardened 4th clutch hub and the few gaskets.

I've got ripping the subframe and lowering the drivetrain to get the side cover off down to a science. Then it's a few bolts and the valve body/channel plate is out and we can drop in the new 4th hub, VB and channel plate, button it up and off ya go. Probably 4 hours with a helper if that.

Actually Scott. Call Dave, tell him I made you. :th_thumbsup-wink: he'll likely know this on off the top of his head.

And no..with both of you helping.. 4 hours..

I have been told by more than one transmission builder that if a car has had the fluid flushed at regular intervals, that it would be ok to do so. But if the car has never had a flush, and has over 100k/8-10 years on it, introducing that much fresh fluid can damage the transmission due to the detergents in the fluid breaking down the old seals. The best route would be to take would be a pan drop with fresh filter, and top off with fresh fluid. If that does not fix it, it is time for a rebuild. So his story is very possible.

Bill.. flush or pan drop service does not fix problems. It only changes fluid and puts a clean filter in the trans.

Whatcha trying to fix buddy?
