• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

I HATE you but want to keep you.

gtp40th

I am really really getting to the breaking point with this car. But i want to keep it because its a different platform to customize. I got rid of a 98 cobra mustang to get the gtp 40th anniv. coupe and now after three years and close to 80k miles i still havnt done any custom mods or such and it keeps giving me problems.

When is it gonna end. I wanna put money away to add stuff but something always breaks. ive replaced both front wheel bearings(and i need another), both front axles, both window regulator/motor assemblies, exhaust peices here and there, calipers, the cooling elbows cooling sensors (both temp sender and level), and it always happens like one week after the last repair.

the dealer suposedly performed the recall for the oil leak but its leaking again and the dealer that did it went out of buisiness.

Now its leaking coolant again, has a slight misfire every once in awhile and my rims are corroded on the inside so i keep losing air every other day.

I guess i just didnt expect to have so many problems. I like the looks and it has a great amount of potential, looking at all the others rides.

are these things normal or am i stuck with a bad build on this one.

thanks for reading and all in advance.

sounds like its getting up in the mileage and the main wear components are all reaching their lifespan.

Both Front axles???? were they factory warrantied at least? Wheel bearings, calipers, exhaust????? with the exception of the elbows sounds fishy? are you the first owner? I had a lot of issues with my first GP 01 GT bought with 41K. wheel bearings new trans at 50k/heater cone recall all kinds of crap. I bought my 04 GTP with 68k and ive only done one rear wheel bearing the coolant elbows and alternator(just bc the bearing was clicking driving me nuts) and a new trans this second at 168k. I do warranty claims for a company. The general consensus on the Grand prixs are the GTP are very reliable. all of them have the LIM coolant leaking into oil issue(use the GREEN not the dexcool). but for the most part they say the supercharged ones are solid. Its wierd you have all those problems. I see cars like this all the time at work (mostly VW/Audi, NEVER buy one, or Mercedes, which has crappy rubber, ie. eng mounts, bushings). My advice get it to work nicely and trade it in for a different GP. its only gona keep hemmoraging your money.....

only things that have gone wrong with my GTP is the driver window reg one time and the factory deck wont play cds. any other issue that have came up where direct results of moding.

I am the second owner, if i believe the dealer, it was owned by a woman that lived in cocoa beach area. The axles were not warrantied, it had over 100k, both front bearings because one started to make noise and then shortly after i replaced that one i checked the other and it was really worn, lots of play.

I understand the coolant elbows are a common problem and now i see that the LIM is another common problem.

As for normal maint i have done all basic maint since i have owned it. I have replaced the plugs twice in three years but to replace another wheel bearing after maybe 20k of use bad replacement is what i think.

I quess what im doing is deciding if i want to keep replaceing parts or get a different vehicle, something newer. oh well. thanks for the feedback. All cars have there problems just tired of them comeing right after another.

well believe the dealer if you want. short story: I went to look at GXPs about a month ago. I test drove one the guy told me the previous owner was an old couple. then i popped the trunk there was padding for subs the center console was cut upon ispection for a dvd player i guess. and the front end sounded like it had 100k on it. I confronted them about it caught them in a lie. transmission fluid also smelt funny. 32k on it. it was a crying shame

Well, suspensions parts wear out....Luckily most parts you can get at the parts store come with a lifetime warranty (ie: driveshafts, wheel bearings, struts, etc)

Pretty much everything you named off is normal wear and tear...

If you're doing the replacements yourself, then think of the money you're saving, if not, I'd advise you do so..

Im in the same boat, always having to fix ****...but atleast it's paid for, right?

I wish it was paid for. I had bad credit when i bought it and i screwed myself on it. Just kicking myself for the stupidity of some bad choices. I also needed a vehicle that was better on gas at the time, i had a 36 mile one way trip to work and the cobra got 16 mpg on a good day if i drove it normally(like that happened). so i went with the gtp 40th coupe. oh well i guess im gonna suck it up and keep fixing it.

i looked at an 06 gtp back in aug, the car had less than 40k on it but the s/c sounded like it had well over 150k on it, knocking and what not, the salesman tried to say it was normal, then i pointed to my car and said you want to lie some more? also the tcs button wouldn't work, the hud was broke, and it was on s rated tires, dealers lie, very car was owned by an old lady and driven only to church on sunday. saturday night that little old lady was playing paul walker in fast and the furious.

Dang, I know this was few post ago but dido my car dealer told me my car was drove by a older couple. When I was inspecting it, I found speaker wires in the back, under the hood, and even underneath the car(also a box shaped indention in the carpet in the back).I have been lucky on the car eccept for tranny issures after puting 30k on the car mostly made of backroad miles.
Dont listen to any bs from someone trying to sale you something, always inspect

@ a3gtp, yea on average driving back roads i got around 16-18 mpg. i had 4:10 s and a whole lotta mods. ported intake and heads aswell as 5 angle valve job etc.......... i dont have enough room to put them all down. it was loud and fast and i drove it to make it louder. i scared the hell out of a cop once with it and he just looked at me and smiled with thumbs up.

as for dealers i dont trust them at all, i used to be a tech at several so i know they are all slime. I looked at it and it seemed good to go. had a small exhaust leak from the cat and they replaced it. only thing that i saw and didnt like was it was totally undercoated. i mean the trunk inside, the hood and engine bay also. but it makes sense since it was in the ocean air everyday. Just means someone paid up the a$$ for that "upgrade"..

I love to act stupid when i go to dealers and then correct them. They dont know which way to go after that.

i guess i got one that needs work. I guess it dosnt help either that im not a big gm fan. Dont hate me because i said that but my dislike of the car makes it break more. superstitious i guess.

Im gonna keep it for another year and see how it goes. if its still giving me problems then ill look into something else.

Thanks for all your feedback.

Heh, I know my dealer happened to screw me over on mine.Got everything at a really good price, inspected everything and made sure everything was going well. Then About a couple days after I had it I noticed a clicking sound coming from the steering at low speeds. Damn ****ers wouldn't do anything about it and just said they would give me 20% off parts and labor. Of course you know where I told them to shove it... will never be going to a dealer again.

Either way, I hope you get things all fixed, I'm sure if one of us helps you, you'll be fine. We don't charge out the ass for stuff we don't do :) Infact we really don't charge at all :p

I can sympathize with the OP. I want to mod too, but I'm trying to get caught up on the maintenance(almost there). I still need to fix a cracked weld after the cat, suspension is 1" lower on right side, and a broken sway bar. but thats all and it will be perfect once again.

I have thought about buying a newer GP, but then I don't know whats gonna go on that one. I know whats good/what isnt on mine and that is valuable. I know it can't love me back but I do love my car.

And the dealer I bought it from said it was running great, but it was misfiring bad on boost. I just changed plugs/wires and it was a whole new animal. Why didn't the dealer just do that???

sounds normal...welcome to the world of a used car...Pontiac or not...GTP or not...honda or toyota, these things wear out...who knows, can you afford a new car payment? w/ insurance? and taxes? really a personal choice...I also didn't read about anything major happening either...

Advice, when something breaks, try to fix it right away...one thing breaking can lead to other damage as well. Do the best you can. sounds like a money pit? nah, not really...I didn't read anything major or too costly... Also remember if you MOD, you're taking away factory performance and can almost guarantee more issues but isan't that with just about any modded car? are you leaning tword go fast mods or things that will only give you future security? such as things that are high quality and will last or only help the motor insted of more stress...

My opinion, get out there, fix it, keep it maintainced...

idk i disagree both axles and 3 wheel bearings at 80k are NOT routine maintenance. Maybe the boots for the axles but axles themselves? But now that its all new might as well keep it, you know the history

it sadly failed but who know's maybe someone just drove the living piss out of it...they failed for a reason, gonna blame it on the car and say the frame is bad? =P lol....

a bad mechanic working on it can cause parts to fail too:D
