Hey guys its f'in freezin. i wanna put a remote start in my car. lookin to spend maybe around $100 bucks and try n put it in myself because ive seen some for cheap. what should i be lookin for exactly?

For this it is all up to you as to what you want from your remote. The cheap remotes have really nothing to them as far as function goes and how far you can use your remote from your car. Last year I spent $500 bucks for one to be installed in my car and I have a mile range with a display that shows what my car is doing at the moment. For example, when I start my car the remote will show that the car is running or if I pop the trunk with the remote it will show that the trunk has been popped. This was very nice for me cause I live on campus and the parking lot that I almost always have to park in is a good half mile away so it is always nice to know it started.
 
Good luck installing yourself. You have to bypass security and that module alone runs like $75. My remote start was $220 done by someone local, definitely something I would not attempt myself even with my experience in wiring car harnesses and the likes.

are you referring to my remote start? because if you are you should be able to get the same remote as mine because I believe the only requirement there is for getting a remote start is for electric locks on your door.

And like Drunkie said about installing them yourself would probably not be the greatest idea even though it doesn't take a lot of time to do it if you have done it before.
 


If you plan on doing the install yourself you will need to bypass the VATS system on the car. Pep boys would be a good place to get the bypass module, there about $35 last time i checked.
 
what a touchy subject seen so many hack job installs. better off going to a specialty shop and getting it installed. not best buy type places.
 
i work at best buy and am close with the installers. their professionals and takes them around 6 hours to install on 1 car. depending on the car the imobilizer costs around 80-100 bucks. and doing it yourself you better know ALOT about wiring and where componants are located. just my input.
 
viper remote stars systems. it depends on the car too. the newer the car the longer it takes usually. and they have to do a bunch of stuff with the security so it doesnt mess it up after the remote start install. but thats also wiring the keyless entry to work with the remote too but still.
 


Wow. I'm a little surprised about that. Cause like I said my remote got put in an hour and I have a newer vehicle too (08).

not trying to insult you. yours may hold a higher standard.

had a esclade come in and the a/c wouldnt shut off. car thought it was like 150 out. look up and theres a big old flip down hanging down. best buy cut the headliner and sliced the wires for the temp sensor.

had a g6 with electric steering come in. service steering system light kept comming on. found a wire ran off the main feed for the steering to the remote start. finally got it out of customer she just had installed and best buy told her to take it to the shop to have the light shut off there was a recall they said lol.
 
I wouldn't recommend installing a remote start yourself. Save up some more money, buy a quality starter and have a pro do it. The company I work for owns a car audio store and they do remote starts. I have been looking at getting one but I might wait until next year. I park inside at night and the only time I get in my car and its cold is after work. Usually I just walk out and start it.
