• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Its a 97 Grand Prix, I cant ever see what gear I am in. This just started to happen as well as my key staying locked in the ignition and not being able to move out of gear without using the little "release" button. I patched the key problem by taping down some button under the steering wheel and I patched the the other problem by taping down that release button. I want it fixed the right way and all of this happened at the same time... Any ideas?

If its seized then it would.

Its on top of the transmission but closer to the firewall.

Has a black cable the same size as your throttle/cruise cable going to it from the firewall.

It's job is basically to tell the computer in the car what gear the trans is in. If it doesn't know its in park then its not going to release the key.

And all you need is a big screw driver...pop the cable loose from the top...can't remember the bolt size...but you've got room in there to loosen it and swap it out pretty quick to see if that was the actual issue...it isn't a common thing to go bad IMO, so a junkyard would be my first stop as long as the transmission in the car you pulling it from doesn't look beat to crap.

Scuse me guys.

Thinking about this a bit. If the range selector switch was fubar'd then it would not allow the car to start. A test to see if the selector is having an issue would be to try starting the car in R, D, 3, 2, or 1. The car should not start in any of those gears if the switch is good.

I haven't looked and can't where I am at the moment, but I'd want to see where the dash gets it's input on gear. It might come from the shifter. Most people with the shifter/key issue find that it's either the soleniod in the column or a part on the shifter itself. I've never heard of someone replacing the range switch to fix the issue. Not saying it's not possible, just odd that in all the reading, fixing and experience that I've never heard that one.

Anything come of this? I know it's an old thread but I'm having a similar issue.

P lights up but none of the others light up.
I will try on my lunch break to see if the car will start while in R or one of the forward gears.

Same exact problem here. no dash indication, key stuck, and shifter locks.

However I can verify that the car will not start in any settings "EXCEPT" for Park and Drive.

I don't have the key stuck issue.

Everything works fine in my application - 1999 GTP just none of the lights but the P on the gauge cluster light up.

theres a tab under the steering column that you can pop out and then a screwdriver up the hole to release your keys from the ignition.
