97GP GT started car and key got stuck past "ON" and before "START" got key out but ignition will not return at all.....is it the tumbler? do i need a whole ignition? Had to disconnect battery cause its stuck past on but before start just enough to not engage starter. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix??

mine did the same thing, it came out sometimes, and sometimes it didnt, and GM wanted an outrageous amount of money to fix it. If you look on the underside of the steering column, theres a little round cover, pop that off and stick something small up there. It will manually release the tumbler and allow you to remove your key. I ended up using a piece of plastic and some foam to keep that it released all the time. It's been like that for over 2years now, and not 1 problem.

I tried that "Machine" and it didnt work, that button is the parking lock solenoid.... I'm sure thats what you are talking about. I think my tumblers are bad, and probably should just change my whole ignition switch unless anyone has another solution.....thanks for the reply though...."Machine"

Is it sticking trying to start it,or after driving it wont turn back to pull the key out? ... or both???

I think you're talking about that little button near the Shifter, on the Shift column...

Watch this video YouTube - Pontiac Key Release Ignition Problem

At 50seconds in, it will show the little round cover on the underside of the steering column that you need to pop off, and how to depress the tumbler release. It's really damn simple, and if you need any more direction at all, i'll go out a take a few pics.

Hope that helps

no mine did this too and the button on the column wouldnt help it...i removed the whole ignition by pounding it with a hammer till the pins fell into place and turned her to on and removed the allen screw...all cause a damn prostitute ripped my keys out of my ignition with the car on cause she thought i short changed her :th_shakinghead2: i didnt by the way she miscounted...figures she didnt have enough schooling to teach her to count to 50
