Jack Point / Location



Are you wanting to jack it up to do some work on the rear wheels (brakes, suspension, etc) or is it going to be on stands a long time? If its just to do basic work, there are jack points just in front of the rear tires. If its longer term, like you going to put it up on jack stands, I will have to defer to someone else.
 
Where the lateral link rods meet (along the center line of the car between the rear wheels) is a good place. I don't know how accessible it is with your dual exhaust. My exhaust blocks it so I can't use it anymore.

Otherwise I use the piece of metal just forward of the rear wheels just before it curves "upward". The car has no true frame (unibody design), but those are as close as you'll find to a frame rail as there is on the car.

Thanks for the reply. I need to leave the car on jack stands for extended periods. So I want to put the stands at the "pinch welds" where the car's scissor jack would go for a tire change. The dual exhaust gets in the way of putting the floor jack under most locations of the subframe.
 
I have a diagram of the jack stand/lift points on my other computer. Will post it later if no one else does.
 
Ive never used jack stands at the normal jack points for any long period of time. So I cannot speak to the safety of that. I have my car up on stands now, but only the front and its sitting on four of them. I really need to jack up the rear as well cause Im going to have to get under there to run my SS braided fuel line and a few other things.

I suppose the jack points would serve the purpose well enough, they just dont inspire a whole lot of confidence in the long term view.
 


I'd use the "frame rail" locations I mentioned before. There are some near the front too, just back from the rear cradle bolts. Good solid area there just like the rear.

I'd also look at getting something with a large foot print. Don't want the smaller foot print most jack stands have for a long period of time.

Since I'm looking at deploying sometime in the next year (nothing too bad, but gone for four months) I've been contemplating storing the Impala. I figured I'd either use the jack points I mentioned (use them all the time for various work on the car) or use something with a better foot print than a normal jack stand on those "frame contact points" aka pinchwelds. I just don't like the thought of pressure at the wrong angle making that area fold over.

Since the Impala has the large aluminum cradle I found the front jack stand locations to appear adequate. Seems like when I did my brakes the rear points were quite solid as well. I didn't use the inch welds. After doing work on my sons GP, I've decided to have some steel boxes made to go over the jack stands to spread out the contact area.

I used the #2 and #5 locations.

congrats on the little one. Sleep will be hard to come by, but time will pass quickly, and soon you'll be sleeping through the night again.
 
So I realize this thread is a little old, but I'm going to throw in my two cents. I have a 1999 GTP, and just tried to jack the car up by the pinch weld in front of the right rear tire as indicated by position number 4 or the bottom-left picture posted by IndeedSS. That lasted for about 10 seconds before the weld folded and the frame started sinking. My quick thinking to release the jack saved the ability to keep the rear door operational.
There are some larger frame members further in but there isn't a lot of space there, and I've always had quite a difficult time getting space for a jack and then a jackstand. I have a dual exhaust too, so I cant get to the middle place. Anyone else have some reccomendations or pictures of places to put their jacks?
 
IndeedSS Thank you for posting the jack points image. I really needed this to be able to use a floor jack to get the car high enough to put jack stands under it. I need to change the fuel filter on my 2003 GTP!
 


gonna throw this out there....dont trust the pinch welds...mine fell today and i was under it idk how i moved in time but the pinch weld was hanging there when i got it back in the air
