FWI vs Open cone

If your going to a 3.4" setup...go open cone. Whatever kind of BS CAI you have...ditch it for an Open Cone. Your welcome.


So I read that it a different thread from the same guy who made the safely modding your 3800 guide and I'm a little confused. My plan is to do headers, FWI, ported S/C, LS1 TB, LS6 valve springs, 1.9 RR, TR55 plugs MSD wires and coils and a 180 T-stat with a tune obviously, But what he says there, just use a open cone? what i have learned over the years has always been get the CAI so I'm looking for some insight here.

Goal is a mostly reliable 3.4 setup.
 


I believe the argument is that in a supercharged application, the air is heated anyways, so you just want to get the most airflow. ....so take out all the bends and ridges.

In N/A, you want the coldest air possible.

I have a "short ram" (cone at the end of the stock tubing) and I didn't notice a difference from my FWI...... hope that helps............ I also don't have to worry about puddles or cleaning all the dirt and grime out of the filter.
 
Sell the ls1 adapter and port your tb and make some cash. i would say go open cone. I have had a cai,fwi, open cone and didnt really notice a difference between them. I sell nice big filters for open cones in the community vendor section.
 


You don't have near enough mods to run a TB that big. It is hurting more than helping.


That's ****in gay, I actually have no mods yet, unless a broken tranny is a mod. I'm about to rebuild the tranny. Was under the impression that was the TB I should use, o well I have already bought it guess I'll try to sell it I'll just send both the S/C and the TB to reptile at the same time if he is still doing the porting.

thought i clarified earlier I'm just trying to refrain from having to buy more then I need, if I don't need to build a FWI then I wont, I'm just trying to get it to a safe 3.4 setup.
 
I ran faster and trapped higher after removing an MSD CAI, but I was running a 2.8 pulley. MAF flow increased so much with open cone that I actually outflowed the MAF. This was simply removing the box around the cone filter, I did not change the filter or shorten the length of the connecting tube.

There is clearly some mod level at which the flow becomes more important than cool air. Let's face it, the supercharger can heat up the air 200-300 degrees with smaller pulleys, so does it really matter if the air entering is 10-20 degrees cooler? The output is probably 5 degrees cooler or something not even worth it. Put the money toward an IC and cool down those s/c temps where it matters.
 
You mean that the FWI that so many people here recommended about a year ago is crap? Ok, maybe crap is a bit strong, but after literally dozens of recommendations, I should have just crammed a big filter on the end of my TB?

I'm still running a stock pulley, but want to get to a 3.4-3.5 setup is all. Should I scrap the FWI?
 


Of course, if I did switch, I have the filter, and the couplers. I could work something up to slap the cone on the end there and put the sensor on it (PVC piece or something).

Any real gains from that flow wise for what I want to do (3.4-3.5 pulley)? I would love the idea of being able to get to the filter easier to clean in, and there have been times where large puddles have been a concern...
