Need ideas for new exhaust!!!

Ok....my next big step is exhaust and I'm pretty siked about it. However, I'm not sure which route to go? I know a local mechanic who does jobs on the side for extra money so I want him to do it. My question is, what setup sounds good on the Grand Prix? I don't want something overbearing, just something to give my car that little extra umph!!! I also dont want to spend a fortune as I have many other mods on my list! What would be a good route to go? I definately want new tips! Do I have to replace the pipes as well as the muffler? Any and all suggesstions welcome....Just don't get to expensive on me!

I just put headers on mine and it sounds better but friday im going to cut out my res and either put a straight pipe in or a glasspack probly keep stock muffs until next year but flowmasters sound really nice

everything will sound okay at idle. it takes a NICE muffler to sound good when you give it throttle. either leave it stock and quiet or get some nice mufflers that ARE NOT chambered (flowmasters). it is fairly common around here to suggest borla mufflers.

some like corsa some like borla some like magnaflows some like flowmasters

It all depends on what you want

I run magnaflows with a res still in place and sounds good

im a die hard 3800 guy.....but why would you want to amplify one of the worst sounding engines of all time.

I have a stock exhaust with 2 of the biggest Magnaflow Resonators i could stick under the car along with the stock mufflers to quiet the noise.

No cat I assume?

I love the Whine of a supercharger, big exhaust just seems to surpass the whine in sound, since the stock exhaust seems to flow pretty well on its own, id suggest just new tips, look into headers w/high flow cat, new down-pipe to remove the u-bend and new/bigger piping to the muffler with 1 or 2 resonators so it flows well but doesn't scream I'm loud and obnoxious, look at me!!!

this would prolly be substantially more expensive but the best way to go if you want to surprise the crap out of the people next to you when you take off

Headers will make the car sound better, but def. keep a resonator, and two mufflers.

The best sounding GP i've ever heard was RegcompG's, and his was stock with a set of Borla's.
It had a godlike idle, but when you gave it gas, it got really quiet.

My personal setup is headers, 2.5" pipe and 2 ****ty mufflers, and it drones like a *****, and is way too loud.

I'd go header's, stock pipe back, and if you want it louder, get some nice mufflers.

Ive got the factory pipe all the way back, I just switched the stock mufflers with 40 series flowmasters and new tips...sounds beastly for a v6...has the low deep idle of a v8

No...it sounds like a raspy Porsche...or a buzzing Honda. NOTHING makes these cars sound like a V8 unless it has a huge cam.

Yeah, the 3.8's dont sound anything like an 8....Gotta love that firing order.

You can get a deep sound, and a nice rumble, but thats about it.

Hell, I want to cam mine, just for sound effects XD

without a cam...get headers, stock GM resonator, and 2 flow thru mufflers and it will sound real good, not too loud either

To tell you the truth my car has headers and the whole exhaust doen it doesn't come close to sounding like a v8 but I have gotten from other gps that the sound of my car sounds good.
