synthetic oil the way to go?

My mechanic told me I should really start going synthetic oil and was tellin me all about it. I seam kinds nervous about it, I mean I know a lot of people use it but it seems too good to be true. Also is it true once you use it you should stay on it? I'm just nervous about not changing every 3000 miles

you can go way beyond 3000 miles with just conventional motor oil. that 3 month/3000 mile rule came from the 70s. motor oil has GREATLY improved since then, and believe it or not, so have engines. the part where once you switch, you cant switch back is complete BS.

i say go for it. i use mobil 1. it performs amazingly compared to conventional. by amazingly i mean my engine is quieter, and no longer uses a quart every 5000 miles. and it still looks clean as hell when i change it at 7-8000 miles. fwiw, i use a purolator pureone oil filter with it

I run a Synthetic Blend in my GT.. on Higher mileage engines I am personally a little apprehensive about putting full Synthetic in... I had an experience were I put Synthetic in a Truck I had that had about 130k on the clock and it had a few minor leaks but it leaked alot worse with the Synthetic than with conventional.

i switched over at 100,000 miles. i dont see an issue...

yes its true if you have a leak, or a leak forming, synthetic oil may speed that up. if everything is in good shape tho, you've got nothing to worry about

Synthetic oil is by far the best but conventional oil is very good and you could probably go 200K on it being changed regularly. Up here in the winter cars with synthetic start so much easier. It's a measure of insurance for me. Look for the deals at the auto parts stores and you can get 5 qts and a filter for about $26. In my GT and the wife's Rover everything is synthetic.

I'm doing a oil change around 8000 Miles, send in a sample to Blackstone Labs and there is still life left in the oil but the oil life monitor has hit 0% by then so its time to put in some fresh Amsoil.

Thanks. I got about 85k on the engine. still a good idea?

What oil to use comes up on this site very often. Everyone has their own preferences, but the truth is if you use an oil on the GM6094M approved oil list and change it according to the OLM (oil life monitor) you going to be fine. I personally use both synthetic and regular dino oil, the urban myth you can’t/shouldn’t change is BS. It is never to late or to early to use synthetic. From personal experience I haven’t noticed any change in engine performance between oils, but synthetic oil does make for better cold weather starting. IMHO synthetic oil is worth the cost if only for the cold weather protection.:th_thumbsup-wink: And here in WI it gets d@M^ cold.

Also, just to reinforce the others comments on 3K oil changes. 3K oil changes are way overkill if you stay off the track and strip. I choose to change my oil at 5K, even though the OLM will bring me out way past that.

That "you can never switch back from synthetic" is a load. bet ya jiffy lube started that. and i noticed a slight change in power when i made the swap on my 93' fox body when i switched to synthetic but the gp is my first venture into forced induction :-O

I personally have used Mobil One 10w30 for the past 6 years and my car is still going at 219k. I sometimes use 4 quarts of mobil one and one bottle of lucas synthetic, but normally just the 5 quarts of mobil one is what I use.

I run amsoil in all of our cars. Run it for 1 year or 25k. Except for the gtp that never stays together for that long That get new oil when ever it is taken apart.

Sure you did.

I use 5w30 Mobil 1. I change twice a year. I just pulled the pan to do the gasket and there isn't a single metal filing in the pan and I drive my car pretty hard. I say go to synthetic if you are going to use the car the way its intended with the boost gauge at max most of the time. If you are going to change it regularly and drive it like a little old lady then stay with conventional oil. That's my just my opinion.
