Tidying up the wiring in the engine bay

I was looking at the engine bay and I was wondering if there is anyway to get the wiring tidied up in there. Ive seen one example of it in the GP community but I dont know what all it took to do what was done.

I dont like that big ole harness that is up front and drapes over the blower and such, so Im just looking to see if there are any quick and dirty tricks to clean things up some or if someone has went all out, how/what all did you do and what parts did you have to use and where did you get them?

I started using chrome convoluted wire loom (Bentley Harris Convoshield Chrome Corrugated tubing) on my engine bay:

I just started removing the stock loom and replacing it with the new stuff. You can also buy chrome wire ties. Spend a little more and get quality stuff. THe stuff I linked above is what I used. It was easy to cut and didn't flake or kink like cheaper looms.

Also, Ron Vogel gave me a tip a while back to make the wire loom look straight or curved to specific positions...use painted pieces of wire clothes hangers inside the loom. :th_thumb-up:
 
While that does look extremely good, I am, for the moment anyway, more after re-routing the wiring in a more tidy fashion so that its not slung over the top of the engine as it is. Ive seen it done, I just dont know how it was done.

However, if that doesnt turn out to be viable, I sure like what you have done to your bay.
 
You know scotty....I was thinking the exact same thing you were the other day about the gtp....theres got to be some way of doing it....That is the only think i hate about fuel injection that there are wires everywhere...Im going to take a look at mine later (if it stops raining)and see if i cant think of anything.
 
I think many wires need to be extended then the main loom is hidden under the blower(TB end) or even longer wires and put it wherever..... but I belivev cutting and splicing is required
 


Well Im not afraid to cut and splice. In fact I was kinda counting on having to do to achieve what I would like. As I mentioned earlier, I have seen one person do it and there were pics on the other site to that effect but it has been some time ago.

My problem with cutting and splicing is using the same wire colors, which Im pretty sure are going to be impossible to find all of them. So that leaves me having to find a spot in the harnes in which I could splice in a neutral color or single color that would not be seen and heaven forbid there ever be a need to do any electrical troubleshooting that required tracing out the wires as that will throw a big wrench into the process.

The other choice is to cut the wires at the connector end and splice in wiring. All you would need is replacement pins which I would think should be easy enough to obtain. But then you are faced again with wire coloring.

So Im not sure what the best option is, but I certainly would like to try.
 
yer lucky...GM used alot of the same wire colors/tracers in many of its cars...

go to the Jyard and pull an engine harness from anything 90 and newer...youll find plenty of wire for what you want to do...

its one reason i have 5 different harness' in a big barrel besides my brand new wire bundles.

when we relocated the ICM in the whippledriv we used 2 junk ICM harness' from the Jyard...noooo problems, solder and use gummy shrink wrap

we plan on reworking of the 442's harness' (aside from what i've alreadyy done) as well as the Riv...

i'd rec an OBDII car but even OBDI cars have many of the same wire colors.

the general saved money everywhere using the same wire colors and circuit layouts from brand to brand and car to truck, actually makes cents :p
 


Well this is true. But it would still be nice to have a good one around here I could go rummage through. Id be in it about ever weekend. I just like having little things on hand either to use or just in case someone needs them. I like helpin' out like that when I am able.
 
I was just digging through a couple Impalas here yesterday looking for a window switch to experiment on. They had some GP's, but most of their cars are already "gutted" fairly heavily. If you need something I can take a look for you.
 
By all means, if they have a complete engine bay harness for a reasonable price, please let me know. I may need two of them to make everything long enough.
 


Yeah, they sure do. But its not the same color code as OEM. Im a stickler for stuff like that. And should their ever be an electrical issue, it would be much easier to trace out the wiring and troubleshoot.
 
Yeah, you're right and I cant argue that. But in the long run I would feel better about it. I used to have a source where I could get just about any automotive wire color scheme imaginable and dirt cheap at that, but I dont have that kind of access anymore sadly. So for the sake of simplicity I will probably find a donor harness. More expensive, yes, but worth it I think.
 
hey Scotty,when i get some time I will go look at the local junkyard down here for me and you also. I dont think the demand for gp parts down here is high at all (being there are not many down here) so we may get lucky...
