cam questions

club of used to own a gp
I'm tired of sub 100 trap speeds so I just ordered the xp cam. What other things should be on my list? so far i have...

-crow cam 105# springs
-cam install kit
-new valve locks and seals
-I guess I'll need new rocker bolts as well

can i stick with a single rollermaster timing chain or do i have to go double? whats with the issues with that? oil pump failure? Do i need the machined oil pump cover?

I was thinking of getting OER lifters so i can rev out a little more but, i already have ls7 lifters and i heard they can rev over 6k too? any word on that?

what pulley can i run? I was thinking 3.3 or 3.4...

cammed you will probably be able to drop below 3.3 no prob
You dont need a double chain if you do go double youl need a machined oild pump cover and the crank gear chamferd the same as the stock sprocket

OER's are noisy im not sure on the ls7 lifters though as far as rpm saftey

Should have gone with a bigger cam #1 :th_jester:

Did you get reusable rocker bolts the last time you put your rockers in? If not...what I would do is get them now...did you get ARP Head Studs when you did your swap? I'd do that now...even though removing the heads is another step incase you plan on diving back into the motor at some point, they are beyond worth it...wish I would have bought them years ago

I ran a stock chain with a new damnper for over 40K and I beat the living GOD out of my car...just get a new chain and new dampener. The issue with the Double Roller is that it has to have the gear machined to match the stock one when sitting next to each other...you can double gasket the front cover, or machine the oil pump cover as well...but I just machined the gear. Done. The XP isn't a rough enough cam to destroy the stock chain/dampner...especially if your not shifting over 6200. I ran mine to almost 6500 for a long time and never had any issues there.

LS7 lifters are the same as everything else since the early '90's...no different than the stock 3800 ones. Reason why I talk them up so much is because you can get them so cheap from LSx vendors and when you buy them you still have a few left over incase you ever have any issues. Revving isn't limited by your lifters, but your valvetrain...the stronger the springs, more head work you have and upgraded timing chain...higher you can run it...but keep it in mind, even with a IS4 cam, your powerband is starting to fall off around 6500 or a bit more...turbo though is a totally different game.

Since you have a Jinnyfive...I'd start with your stocker...get it broken in. Then throw the 3.4" on there and go to town...not much lower though unless you get head work and or an IC/Meth. The point of your motor isn't boost...its the compression ratio...making all that power OUT of boost.

See my REDNESS :th_thumbsup-wink:

Buy a NIC cam.

Be a badass

From what I've read the NIC cam doesn't really impress me all that much.

I like the idle of the xp, I loved the way it sounds in person :D. Xp and s1x seem to be a good entry level cam, both being very similar, where I've heard xp is better for street use, pulling more on the top end, which is what i was really looking for. Meth is on its way as well, most likely summer time

ill be getting new re-useable rocker bolts, since im probably going to sell my current set with the 1.9 rollers also, gm timing chain, and the 105's along with all the gaskets etc etc, and I'm still debating whether or not to get head studs.

Does anyone have a write-up on how to install a cam with the motor in the car? or is it easier out of the car

Way easier out of the car. You can have the engine out in under an hour. Get a S1x if you want a smaller cam.

despite the sound, what does the NIC offer? Apparently it bleeds boost like mad allowing you to run a smaller pulley.

That's the reason. It'll let you run higher boost levels. People who have ran the NIC cam touch 12's with just injectors, a tiny ass pulley, valvetrain mods, and a good tune.

if youre debating between an XP and an s1x, id suggest the s1x. it has more of a midrange than the xp does and it sounds better.

Since its smaller than the XP, I assume it can be safely run on a stock timing chain?

And valvetrain mods would be namely rockers, springs and perhaps pushrods?

I'd say you need to figure out whats goin on for sure thats making you trap sub 100mph. A rockered car should easily hit 13's and 100mph traps or above. Just throwing a cam in there isn't going to fix everything, they need a better tune to run on.

How much you think you'll be letting those 1.9s/105s go for?

I'm not sure yet, i probably won't be ready to sell until the middle of summer

yeah, i realize that, I'm trying to get together with a local so he can look at my file, just work keeps getting in the way. I'm pretty sure my tune is way off, the car breaks up
